Redwood Life Update: Community engagement meeting set for May 15
By Rona Gundrum

RECAP: In July 2023, the City Council initiated a City-led process to analyze the
proposed Redwood Life redevelopment project, where the current 85-acre, 968,000
sq.ft., 20-building office and life sciences campus, located along Marine Parkway,
would be transformed into 3.31M sq. ft. of office and life sciences space within 15
new buildings. The site would also include a 104-room hotel, an amenity center
and open space.
The City-led process includes conducting community engagement, preparing an
Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and consideration of repealing the existing
Westport Specific Plan, which is no longer General Plan compliant, and replacing
it with a new Precise Plan. A Precise Plan is a document that governs the future
development of an area where unique conditions and the surrounding area require
special guidance.
WHERE WE ARE NOW - Phase 1: Over the past several months, consultants,
hired by the City, have been reviewing documents, staff analysis, and community
concerns received to date. Consultant-led community engagement began in mid-
April with several stakeholder meetings discussing topics generated by concerns
raised in past conversations with community members. The next community-wide
meeting will take place on May 15 at the Redwood Shores Library.
NEXT STEPS - Phases 2-4: CEQA project alternatives, based on community The planning, engagement, and environmental review phases are estimated to take

This month we’re spotlighting end of year events and work

Culture: Our staff and parent leadership groups are hard at

committed to prioritizing student voice because we recognize that the
perspectives and experiences of our students are essential in shaping our work.
Every year, we ask students to share their insights with us through Youth Truth’s
robust survey. In return we gain invaluable feedback on various aspects of our
educational environment, including academics, engagement, culture, and
more.
By actively incorporating this feedback into our decision-making processes,
we strive to foster a culture of inclusivity and ensure that our initiatives resonate

Astrophotography in the Shores MAY 2 0 2 4
By Kumar Srinivasan
For the last several years, the talk of the astronomy community
worldwide has been the Great American Solar Eclipse event of
April 8, 2024, and though the weather that ensued sent us on a
roller-coaster of emotions, the spectacle of totality did not
disappoint in the end! For an event like this, planning begins well
in advance and so it was in our case as well when my family & I decided several
months back on Dallas, Texas to be our viewing site. A week before the eclipse,
weather forecasts for Dallas were looking dicey causing some anxiety but we
decided to stick with our plans since no one site particularly assured clearer weather

than others.
Amazingly, we actually

of April 8. As the day In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage

stayed clear. And then (West Bengal)
minutes before totality,
thick clouds rolled in

sending our hearts sinking! When totality struck, the clouds miraculously cleared (Hawai'i)
just enough to glimpse (& capture on camera) those precious moments. We, along Redwood Shores
with the gathered crowd, gasped in astonishment as the Sun’s corona (the outer
atmosphere that is usually hidden by the sun’s brightness) and several prominences Branch Library

turned from bright daylight to twilight-like that we could pick out Venus and For ages 16+
Jupiter (currently in the daytime sky and thus hidden in the Sun’s glare), the
temperatures dropped so much that the air cooled conspicuously, and the birds
that had been chattering nonstop suddenly turned silent! It was a thoroughly PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Providing tax preparation and planning, Menger and Brinig both said that they were inspired by seeing how much food
waste was being generated on campus. This composting program was born out of

“The group of kids are very passionate and that has been great for other students
to see that when they come up with a solution, they can actually take action,”
Hansen-Vera said.
A big facet of the composting group is the education factor. Beyond rerouting trash
that may be in the wrong bins, the students want their classmates to be able to
learn how to compost on their own.
“What’s worked is that we tell people that you can come up to the people in the
compost group and you can ask us a question if you don’t know, and then we’ll
show you and answer your question,” Menger said.
