Objective:
At the end of the discussions, you are expected to:

·Understand the Laws of Exponents and

·Apply the Laws of Exponents for Multiplication
·Solve Problems Involving Multiplication of Powers
What is exponent?
An Exponent is a little number written at the upper right portion of a base that tells how
many times the base is used in a multiplication. Exponents are also called powers or
indices.

LAWS OF EXPONENT
Rules of 1
There two simple “rules of 1” to remember.

1. Any number raised to the power of “one” equals

itself.

2. One raised to power is “one”.

EXAMPLES:
PRODUCT RULE
If m and n are natural numbers, then

In words, to multiply powers having the same base, keep the

base and add the exponents.
Examples:
POWER RULE
If m and n are natural numbers, then

In words, to find the power of a power of a base, keep the base

and multiply the exponents.
Examples:
POWER OF A PRODUCT RULE
If m and n are natural numbers, then

In words, to find the power of a product, find the power of

each factor and then multiply the remaining powers.
