IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: Day 1)

The figure at the right is an irregular figure. The areas of such irregular figures can be
determined by calculating the areas of these rectangles and squares. To find the
area of a figure which is a combination of rectangles and squares, we calculate the
area of each figure separately and then add them to find the total area.

Let’s find the area of this irregular figure.

If we analyze it carefully, we can break this figure in squares or/and rectangles.

Then find the area of each cut piece using the formula Area = length x width.

There are two rectangles formed, labelled

A and B, and one square labelled C. We are now going to find the area of each
rectangle and square in order to find the area of the figure.

4 cm 4 cm 4 cm

8 cm 8 cm C 4 cm
A B
Area = l x w
Area = 4 cm x 4 cm
Area = l x w Area = l x w Area = 16 cm2
Area = 8 cm x 4 cm Area = 8 cm x 4 cm
Area = 32 cm2 Area = 32 cm2

Now we add the area of each shape.

Area of the figure = Area of A + Area of B + Area of C
Area of the figure = 32 cm2 + 32 cm2 + 16 cm2
Area of the figure = 80 cm2

You can also break the figure like this. Try to find the area of this figure using this break
and see if you will come out with the same answer.

Area of Triangle
The area of triangles can be found by using the following formula. As you can see, to find the area, just multiply the base
by the height and divide the result by 2.

𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑥 ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 = 2
𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑥 ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 =
height = 6 cm 2

9 𝑐𝑚 𝑥 6 𝑐𝑚
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 =
2
54 𝑐𝑚2
base = 9 cm 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 =
2

𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 = 27 𝑐𝑚2

Area of Parallelogram
The area of a parallelogram is the base times the height. Area = b x h

Area of Parallelogram = b x h
height = 8 m Area of Parallelogram = 12 m x 8 m
Area of Parallelogram = 96 m2

base = 12 m

Area of Trapezoid
A trapezoid is a 4-sided figure with one pair of parallel sides. To find the area of a trapezoid, take the sum of its bases,
multiply the sum by the height of the trapezoid, and then divide the result by 2.
(𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 1+𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 2) 𝑥 ℎ
Formula: 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑧𝑜𝑖𝑑 =
2

base = 6 cm (𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 1 + 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 2) 𝑥 ℎ

𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑧𝑜𝑖𝑑 =
2
(6 𝑐𝑚 + 8 𝑐𝑚) 𝑥 3 𝑐𝑚
height = 3 cm 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑧𝑜𝑖𝑑 =
2

14 𝑐𝑚 𝑥 3 𝑐𝑚
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑧𝑜𝑖𝑑 =
2
base = 8 cm
42 𝑐𝑚2
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑧𝑜𝑖𝑑 =
2

𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑧𝑜𝑖𝑑 = 21 𝑐𝑚2
