con otro. Y si no hallan amos,
pedirlo por Dios ó tomar cordel y
ser ganapanes. Y si nosotros los
despedimos, no hallamos otros
mejores, y por ventura serían de
peor condición; pero los señores
que se sirven de hombres que
tienen y temen la honra, no pasan
por este trabajo, que con ser
buenos y hijos de buenos, demás
de no hacer vileza, procuran tener
contento siempre al señor con
quien viven, sufriendo sus
desabrimientos, sus
importunidades y sus
condiciones, que son muchas
veces fuera de todos términos de
razón, porque saben que han de
salir con todo lo que quieren, sin

merced á los que bien y con

Antonio.—Ese es el mayor que
los servidores padescen, á lo
menos aquellos que, como habéis
dicho, son criados de grandes
señores y príncipes, porque no
sirven tanto por el galardón y
premio que les dan de su salario y
partido, como por la esperanza
que tienen de ser remunerados
en beneficios y mercedes. Y
muchas veces les pasa la vida
bebiendo los vientos como
camaleones y cebándose en
esperanzas vanas, sin sacar más
fruto ni provecho de hallarse
burlados.
Luis.—No tienen de esso los
señores toda la culpa.
Antonio.—¿Cómo no? Pues los
servidores ¿hacen por su parte lo
que son obligados?
Luis.—Yo os lo diré: mucho está
en ser unos venturosos y más
bien afortunados que otros, digo
cuanto á la opinión de algunos,
que la verdad católica no lo
consiente; mas prosiguiendo en
alguna manera la vulgar opinión,
para que mejor lo entendáis,
quiero deciros en breves palabras
que cuando niño me acuerdo que
me contaron. Un rey que hubo en
los tiempos antiguos, cuyo
nombre no tengo memoria, tuvo
un criado que le sirvió muchos
años con aquel cuidado y
fidelidad que tenía obligación, y
viéndose ya en la vejez y que
otros muchos que habían servido
tanto tiempo ni tan bien como él
habían recebido grandes premios
y mercedes por sus servicios, y
que él sólo nunca había sido
galardonado ni el rey le había
hecho merced ninguna, acordó de
irse á su tierra y passar la vida
que le quedaba en granjear un
poco de hacienda que tenía. Para
esto pidió licencia y se partió, y el
rey le mandó dar una mula en que
fuesse, considerando que nunca
había dado nada á aquel criado
suyo, y que teniendo razón de
agraviarse se iba sin haberle
dicho ninguna palabra. Y para
experimentar más su paciencia
invió otro criado suyo que,
haciéndose encontradizo con él,
fuese en su compañía dos ó tres
jornadas y procurase entender si
se tenía por agraviado. El criado
lo hizo así, y por mucho que hizo
nunca pudo saber lo que sentía,
más de que passando por un
arroyo la mula se paró á orinar en
él y dándole con las espuelas
dixo: Arre allá, mula, de la
condición de su dueño, que da
donde no ha de dar. Y passando
de la otra parte aquel criado del
rey que le seguía, sacó una
cédula suya por la cual mandaba
que se volviesse y lo hizo luego; y
puesto en la presencia del rey, el
cual estaba informado de lo que
había dicho, le preguntó la causa
que le había movido decir aquello.

Yo, señor, os he servido mucho

que he podido; nunca me habéis
hecho merced ninguna, y á otros
que no os han servido les habéis

tenían menos necesidad que yo, y
así dixe que la mula era de
vuestra condición, que daba
donde no había de dar, pues daba
agua al agua, que no la había
menester, y dexaba de darla

agravian sin razón, quiero salvar
á los que la tienen con aquel
exemplo de Philipo, rey de
Macedonia, el cual tuvo un criado
llamado Nicanor, de quien fué
muy bien servido, y como no
recibía el galardón conforme á
sus servicios, comenzó á
desenfrenar la lengua y á decir
mal del rey, tan libre y
sueltamente donde quiera que se
hallaba, que unos privados de
Philipo que le oyeron se lo fueron
á decir; agraviando el negocio y
pareciéndoles que no cumplían
con menos, le inducían á que le
castigase gravemente y le
desterrase de su reino. El rey dixo
que él haría en él lo que
convenía, y de ahí á tres ó cuatro
días hizo muy grandes y crecidas
mercedes á Nicanor. Y passado
muy poco tiempo tornó á
preguntar á aquellos criados
suyos si porfiaba Nicanor en decir
todavía tantos males dél como
solía. Ellos le respondieron que
antes decía y publicaba tantos

tenía el sólo la culpa, sino yo,
pues era en mi mano hacer que

hay menos obligación que
entonces para que los señores
tengan más cuenta con su familia
y con los que mayor trabajo

dexando esta materia, ¿no veis
cuál viene Bernardo tan pensativo
y triste que apenas puede
moverse, la color mudada y
levantando los ojos al cielo como
si tuviesse que tratar con las

que á lo que yo entiendo, el que
daba poco ha jugado y debe
haber perdido lo que tenía.

por acá es el camino si no vais

he venido á hallar tan buena

el juego no os dexa á vos, no le

de vos en algún tiempo.
Antonio.—Ya le voy yo
perdiendo el miedo, aunque no
puedo negaros no ser verdad
todo lo que habéis dicho, assí
dejásedes vos su amistad como
yo la he dexado. Por que he
conocido sus traiciones y
falsedades, sus trapazas y sus
engaños. He visto esto, hele
cobrado odio y enemistad y tan
ruin voluntad, que de muy grande
amigo le he hecho muy grande
enemigo.
Bernardo.—Ora ya que poco
trabajo sería menester para que
retornasen á hacer las amistades.
Antonio.—Bien me tenéis
entendido, si vos queréis tener
paciencia para escucharme un
cuarto de hora como la tenéis
para jugar cincuenta días y
noches, yo os mostraré lo que
siento del juego y de los que
siguen su blandeza para que
entendáis cuál lexos estoy de
tornar á caer en este piélago, y
por ventura podrá aprovecharos á
vos tanto que, aunque no sea
muy á vuestro salvo, no dexéis de
saliros á buen tiempo deste
laberinto en que andáis tan
perdido.
Bernardo.—Mirad, señor
Antonio; si me queréis predicar
los males y daños del juego y el
peligro de la conciencia de los
que juegan, en mi posada tengo
un librillo que se llama Remedio
de jugadores, que trata esta
materia muy copiosamente; si
habéis de decirme lo mismo que
en él he leído, bien podéis desde
agora excusaros de tomar esse
trabajo.
Antonio.—¿Y no os ha
aprovechado ninguna cosa lo que
aquel frayre os aconseja?
Bernardo.—No, porque con ver
que no hacía al propósito de mi
voluntad, por un oído me entraba
y por otro me salía; porque estoy
determinado de no ser sancto
como él me quiere hacer.
Antonio.—Pues si no os
aprovechó lo quél como buen
frayre y muy buen teólogo os ha
dicho, por ventura os aprovechará
lo que yo como tahur y como
hombre que he traído á cuestas
los atabales os dixesse, porque
serán diferentes cosas y
conocidas por pura expiriencia,
por haber passado las más dellas
por mí y haber visto las otras en
otras gentes, y también os quiero
decir que no han passado menos
por vos. Y pues esse frayre trata
lo que principalmente toca al
ánima y á la conciencia, yo trataré
agora de los males y
persecuciones que el cuerpo
recibe por el juego, aunque al
cabo también diré lo uno como lo
otro. Lo primero que tiene el juego
es quitar á los hombres el buen
conocimiento, para que no
entiendan lo que hacen, que si lo
entendiesen él quedaría perdido
del todo, porque no habría quien
le siguiesse, ni aun quien le
conociesse, y assí usa deste
ardid y de otros muchos,
principalmente de dar algunos
alegrones de ganancias, para
después se le restituya todo con
doblada pérdida, de las cuales la
mayor de todas es la del tiempo
mal empleado. Porque si San
Bernardo dice que todas las horas
que se duermen se han de quitar
y descontar de la vida, ¿qué
mayor sueño que el del juego,
donde todos los sentidos están
tan atentos, la memoria de otras
cosas tan olvidada y el juicio tan
fuera de sí mesmo, para entender
cuál es bueno ni cuál es malo,
que, como todos sabemos,
muchas veces estamos como
beodos, porque conociendo la
ventura contraria, los naipes y
suertes dellos, en favor de los que
juegan con nosotros, de manera
que casi claramente nos dicen
que hemos de perder, la beodez
del juego nos detiene y nos
adormece, de manera que no
despertamos hasta acabársenos
la moneda, y entonces caemos en
la cuenta de nuestro daño,
cuando ya no tiene remedio?
Verdaderamente, señor Bernardo,
podéis creer que los que juegan
no viven, y que, teniéndolo por
oficio, su vida es como sueño,
porque cuando comen no toman
gusto en los manjares, pensando
en lo que han perdido y cómo se
desquitarán, y si han ganado
cómo acabarán de ganar cuantos
dineros hay en el mundo, y tan
embelesados están en esto, que
acaesce muchas veces acabando
de comer preguntarles lo que han
comido y no saber decirlo, ni
acordarse dello; y con el bocado
en la boca van á buscar con quien
jueguen, y si á su posada vienen
jugadores, primero están los
dados ó los naipes en la mesa
que se alcen los manteles; y
muchas veces les acaesce
comenzar á jugar y pasarse aquel
día y después la noche y ser otro
día sin haberse levantado de un
lugar. Esta bien se puede decir
que no es vida, pues se passa el
tiempo sin vivirlo, y de aquí
nascen muchos inconvenientes
porque dexan los hombres de
entender en lo que toca á las
haciendas y al aprovechamiento
de sus casas: pierden el cuidado
de las mujeres y de los hijos y de
lo que es menester proveer para
ellos, y tienen en poco la salud de
los cuerpos; porque de la
desorden del juego suceden
muchas enfermedades, que de
estar tantas horas y tanto tiempo
sentados sin hacer ejercicio, ni
movimiento, no se gastan los
manjares que se comen, y vienen
á corromperse y á engendrar
malos humores. Y demás desto,
el que pierde porque no se
levante el otro con la ganancia, y
el que gana porque no se le
passe la dicha ó ventura que
tiene, aunque tengan necesidad
de cumplir con lo que es forzoso
con sus cuerpos, se detienen y
fuerzan á estar quedos, y desto
viene muchas veces la cólica
pasión, la estrangurria, la disuria,
mal de hijada y otras pasiones
diferentes destas, y aun muchas
veces tras ellas la muerte. Porque
si estos trabajos del juego ó se
pasan ó pueden mejor tolerarse
en verano, veréis hombres en el
ivierno que con estar fuego y
brasas en las piezas donde
juegan, están tan descuidados y
embebecidos en los juegos, que
cuando los dexan y se levantan
tienen las piernas casi entomidas
con el frío, el cual con la humidad
les ha penetrado los huesos, y
cuando se van á sus camas no
pueden calentar en toda la noche,
y cuando esto se continúa se
vienen á follecer y padecer mill
trabajos, poniendo la culpa dellos
á otras ocasiones muy diferentes
y no al juego, por no perder la
amistad que con él tienen. Pues
las cabezas de los que juegan
desta manera, ¿no padescen
detrimento, que los más se
levantan con muy grande dolor
dellas, y otros tan desvanecidos,
que después que se levantan de
jugar no se pueden tener en los
pies? Tras esto viene que los que
han ganado mucho muestren con
grandes señales de regocijo la
alegría que llevan consigo, y los
que han perdido, una
incomparable tristeza, teniendo la
color mudada, los ojos baxos, el
gesto turbado, dándonos tristes y
muy profundos suspiros, todo en
mengua y afrenta y ignominia
suya, no sintiendo los
desventurados lo que se platica,
lo que se dice y murmura dellos y
de su poquedad y desventura.
Porque los que assí sienten la
pérdida no debían aventurarla por
la ganancia, por no mostrar tan
gran flaqueza en lo uno como en
lo otro. Otros cuando juegan, si
están perdiendo se congoxan y
trasudan; vereislos limpiar el
sudor cien veces, ya dexan las
capas, ya las gorras, ya se
afloxan los vestidos hasta mostrar
las camisas, porque la congoxa
de la pérdida les ahoga y quita el
huelgo, y así hacen diversos
meneos y visajes como si
estuviesen locos. De manera que
dan qué mirar y qué reir y burlar á
los que están presentes. Cada
cosa que viene les embaraza; de
cada uno que entra se amotinan;
cada palabra que oyen juzgan
que es en su perjuicio, y en fin, no
hay cosa que no les saque de
paciencia, y pluguiese á Dios que
parassen en esto, y no en
perderlo del todo, offendiendo á
Dios con las lenguas é blasfemar,
que aunque todos no lo hacen en
público, pocos hay que en secreto
no hablen con Dios muy
enojados, y unas veces con el
pensamiento y otras veces entre
dientes le dicen lo que se les
antoja, con palabras desacatadas,
tratando entre sí muchas y
diversas herejías, que por cada
una dellas merecían ser
gravemente castigados en el alma
y en el cuerpo.
Luis.—Ya esso es salir de lo que
cuando comenzasteis esta
materia prometisteis: pues
dexados los daños del cuerpo,
comenzáis á tratar los del alma.
Antonio.—No es posible menos
para que vaya bien enhilado;
pues tornando á lo que decía,
después que se van jugando los
dineros y las haciendas, los que
