Semipermanent Connection 2 Overview of Semipermanent Connection

2 Overview of Semipermanent Connection

The semipermanent link enables some of the idle E1 timeslots in the BSS system to be used to provide
transmission paths for subscribers. The paths are used to transmit information such as business hall
information, alarm information on the BTS AC power supply, and other maintenance information.
When the telecom operator needs to transmit some data from one terminal in the BSS system to another
terminal and the data does not have a high requirement for the transmission bandwidth, the idle
transmission resources in the BSS system can be configured as the semipermanent link for transferring
these data. The semipermanent link enables telecom operators to fully utilize the network resources and
minimize the operation cost.

Semipermanent Connection 3 Technical Description

3 Technical Description
3.1 About This Chapter
In certain situations, the telecom operator may require the BSS to provide semipermanent connections
for transmitting information such as business hall information, alarm information on the BTS AC power
supply, and other maintenance information.
Figure 3-1 shows a semipermanent connection between the BTS and the A interface. A semipermanent
connection consists of the following links:
 Monitoring timeslot between the Ater interface board in the BM subrack and the BTS
 Ater connection path between the BM subrack and the TC subrack (transmission path between the
MPS/EPS and the TCS, used for traffic and signaling transmission)
 Semipermanent link between the Ater interface board in the GTCS and the A interface

In the BSS, semipermanent link and monitoring timeslot are collectively called semipermanent
connection.
 The semipermanent link refers to the link configured on both sides of the TNUa board. That is, the
BSC interface boards work as the input and output of the semipermanent connection, and the TNUa
board performs information exchange.
 The monitoring timeslot refers to the link between the BSC interface board and the BTS.

Based on actual requirements, the input port and output port can be different ports on the same interface board.

3.1 Semipermanent Connection

The components involved in a semipermanent connection are the transparent transmission interface
board (that is, any interface board supporting TDM switching), TNUa, Abis interface board, and BTS
interface board. In traditional TDM transmission mode, the BSS must reserve a timeslot (the timeslot is
not used to transmit traffic signals or signaling) on the transparent transmission interface board, on the
TNUa, on the Abis interface board, and on the E1 link between the Abis interface board and the BTS
interface board to establish a semipermanent connection from the BTS to the A interface. The BSS
connects the reserved timeslots one by one to form a connection path. Figure 3-2 takes the EIUa as an
example to show a semipermanent connection.

In Abis transmission optimization mode, the physical links are established by connecting a timeslot on
one port of the PEUa to a timeslot on another port, and then by using E1 cables to connect the ports of
the PEUa and EIUa. Other links in Abis transmission optimization mode are established in the same way
as in TDM transmission mode. Figure 3-3 shows a semipermanent connection in Abis transmission
optimization mode.
Figure 3-3 Semipermanent connection (in Abis transmission optimization mode)

 The PEUa is the BSC interface board that supports Abis transmission optimization.
 The transparent transmission interface board is only responsible for transparently transmitting signals. It can be
configured as an output-only board, an input-only board, or a board for both input and output. All interface boards that
support TDM transmission can serve as transparent transmission interface boards.

3.2 Implementation of Semipermanent Connection

This describes the implementation of Semipermanent Connection in different physical entities.

Implementation of Semipermanent Connection in the Interface Board

The connection between the E1 timeslot of the BSC interface board and the high way (HW) timeslot of
the TNUa is pre-established by the BSC without manual configuration. The BSC interface board
supports semipermanent links of the following data rates: 8 kbit/s, 16 kbit/s, 32 kbit/s, and 64 kbit/s.
Semipermanent links cannot be configured between the MPS/EPS and the TCS.

Implementation of Semipermanent Connection in the BTS

The BTS interface board can transparently transmit the monitoring timeslot signals from one port to any
other port. In addition, the BTS interface board can transparently transmit the monitoring timeslot signals
to the incoming E1 timeslot of a lower-level BTS. In this manner, the semipermanent connection of
cascaded BTSs is implemented.

Implementation of Semipermanent Connection in the TNUa

A connection is established between the timeslot of the semipermanent connection on one BSC
interface board and the input port on the TNUa. In addition, another connection is established between
the timeslot of the semipermanent connection on another BSC interface board and the output port on the

Semipermanent Connection 3 Technical Description

TNUa. The TNUa establishes a connection between these connections based on relevant timeslots.
Thus, a semipermanent connection is established between the transparent transmission interface board
and another interface board or a BTS.
After the semipermanent connection is configured, timeslot cross connection equipment should be
installed at both ends of the physical link. The equipment extracts the required timeslots to transmit
signals.

4 Engineering Guidelines
Configuring a Monitoring Timeslot
This describes how to configure a BTS monitoring timeslot on the BSC. The parameters BSCSRN,
BSCSN, BSCPN, BSCTS, and BSCSUBTS specify the subrack number, slot number, port number,
timeslot number, and sub-timeslot of the BSC interface board to which the central monitoring device is
connected. The parameters STPN, STTS, and STSUBTS specify the port number, timeslot number, and
sub-timeslot number of the BTS to which the monitoring device is connected. You can set the parameter
TSRATE according to the actual bandwidth requirement. Figure 4-1 shows the typical signal flow of a
monitoring timeslot.

BSC Monitoring timeslot signal flow

The BSS supports four data rates of BTS monitoring timeslots: 8 kbit/s, 16 kbit/s, 32 kbit/s, and 64 kbit/s.
The default data rate of a BTS monitoring timeslot is 64 kbit/s.
 If the data rate of a BTS monitoring timeslot is 64 kbit/s, BSCSUBTS and STSUBTS must be set to 0.
 If the data rate of a BTS monitoring timeslot is 32 kbit/s, BSCSUBTS and STSUBTS must be set to 0
or 4.
 If the data rate of a BTS monitoring timeslot is 16 kbit/s, BSCSUBTS and STSUBTS must be set to 0,
2, 4, or 6.
 If the data rate of a BTS monitoring timeslot is 8 kbit/s, BSCSUBTS and STSUBTS can be set to any
allowable values.
The BSC interface board connected to the central monitoring device can be any type of interface board
in the MPS/EPS. The inner-BSC path corresponding to the monitoring timeslot is automatically specified
by the BSC. On the Abis interface, the system automatically allocates an idle timeslot to transmit the
monitoring signals.

Configuring a BTS monitoring timeslot may reset the BTS. It is recommended that the BTS monitoring timeslot be
preconfigured.

Configuring a Semipermanent Link

You can configure a semipermanent link between the BSC interface boards. The parameter IDX
identifies a semipermanent link. You can set the parameter LNKRATE according to the actual bandwidth

requirement. The parameters BSCSRN, BSCSN, BSCPN, BSCTS, and INTSN determine the timeslot
configurations at one end of a semipermanent link. The parameters OUTSRN, OUTSN, OUTPN and
OUTTSN determine the timeslot configurations at the other end of the semipermanent link. Figure 4-2

 If the data rate of a semipermanent link is 16 kbit/s, INTSN and OUTTSN must be set to 0, 2, 4, or 6.
 If the data rate of a semipermanent link is 8 kbit/s, INTSN and OUTTSN can be set to any allowable
values.

 The semipermanent link must be configured between the same type of subracks. That is, both the subracks must be the
MPS/EPS or TCS, and a semipermanent link cannot be configured between the MPS/EPS and the TCS.
 The semipermanent link must be configured on the interface boards. The input port and output port of a semipermanent
link cannot be the same.
 If an E1 link is configured with a 16 kbit/s LAPD signaling link, the data rate of the semipermanent link on this E1 link
must be 16 kbit/s.
