‭Rocky Mountain High School‬

‭Algebra 1‬
‭2024-2025‬
‭Hello Students and Parents,‬

‭ elcome to Algebra 1! So excited to be teaching this course which will be covering lots of fun‬
W
‭and exciting topics. We will cover linear equations and inequalities, solving linear systems,‬
‭polynomial operations, exponents, factoring, and so much more. This course is going to push‬
‭students to connect with the content in many different ways, from solo or group work to in-depth‬
‭projects, to construct the ideas of concepts we are learning.‬

I‭ believe that learning math is important for learning problem solving skills, perseverance, and‬
‭knowing that making mistakes is great for learning. Teaching is meant to support students'‬
‭learning, not control it, so I open up the class for questions and learning from each other as well‬
‭as from lectures. We are all working towards the understanding of the same topics, so let’s learn,‬
‭make connections, and make mistakes together. My expectations are a bit high, but I know that‬
‭all my students can rise to the occasion. As your teacher I want to respect your time and hope‬
‭that you will do the same for me. My door is always open and I encourage you to ask questions‬
‭during and after class about any problems or additional help you may need to thrive in this class.‬

‭Classroom Expectations‬
‭ e will be making up our own list in class for expectations of how we interact with each other‬
W
‭and what we should be doing during class to facilitate the best learning environment and what‬
‭that all looks like, but some basic rules I have:‬
‭●‬ ‭Learning tools are not toys but devices to assist learning‬
‭●‬ ‭Respect all of the students and adults that come into the class‬
‭●‬ ‭When class starts at the bell be ready with your pencil and binder on your desk‬
‭●‬ ‭Cellphones are only allowed when working independently or when specifically directed‬
‭to use them for an activity *policy will go deeper in depth is section on cell phones*‬

‭Supplies for Class‬

‭Students will be expected to come to class everyday with these supplies:‬
‭●‬ ‭1 inch Binder‬
‭●‬ ‭Pencils (colored and regular)‬
‭‬ H
● ‭ omework (if they did not finish work from the day before)‬
‭●‬ ‭1 ream of loose leaf paper‬

‭Info on Grading‬
‭Grades will be a culmination of‬‭quizzes, activities, notebook checks, and projects‬‭.‬
‭A: 100-85‬
‭B: 84-75‬
‭C: 74-65‬
‭D: 64-55‬
‭Grading assignments everyday seems a bit much, so each day there will be an activity that is‬
‭graded for completion the next day on a sheet given each week. Grading of those sheets will be 2‬
‭stamps for completed work, 1 stamp for half done, and no stamps if not attempted. The sheet will‬
‭have problems on the back over what has been covered that will be graded when turned in.‬
‭Notebook checks‬‭will happen every 2-3 weeks to see if all the activities and week sheets are in‬
‭their binders for 5 points total each check.‬
‭Projects‬‭will happen every three units or so involving work time in class and possibly outside of‬
‭class to get a deeper understanding of the concepts of that unit and each project is worth 30‬
‭points each.‬
‭Quizzes‬‭are given at the end of each unit with ample time to study and use of class notes will be‬
‭permitted. Quizzes are out of 50 points and each week's sheet is for 10 points (7 for problems‬
‭and 3 for stamps).‬

‭Extra Credit‬
‭ xtra credit will be built into quizzes as a possibility to gain points back. There will be 1-2‬
E
‭challenge problems on each quiz in case students want to go a little further and try a problem that‬
‭shows a deeper understanding of the content.‬

‭Late Work & Absences‬

I‭ nform me of conflicts with quizzes and extracurricular activities at least 2 days prior.‬
‭Assignments can be reevaluated for up to 1 week after the topic with full credit and then 15% off‬
‭total points each week after that up until the end of the quarter. Quizzes can be taken 1 or 2 days‬
‭after the actual test was administered unless absent for those days.‬
‭Excused absences‬‭have a grace period of 3 class days for assignment after coming back before‬
‭points are taken off and 1 class day for quizzes.‬
‭*it can be extended if there are extenuating circumstances (i.e. not there for more than 60 % of‬
‭content, health issues, etc.)‬
‭Unexcused absences‬‭have a grace period of 2 class days for assignments before points are taken‬
‭off and 1 class day for quizzes unless there are extenuating circumstances.‬
‭Tardies:‬‭I will start class at the bell, if you come in more than 5 minutes late I will need a note‬
‭from a teacher or admin office. When coming in late do not disturb others learning *be quiet*‬
‭and get set up to join the lesson quickly.‬
‭Cellphones‬
‭ he use of cellphones, apple watches, and computers will only be when there is personal work‬
T
‭time and it is not distracting from work (i.e. watching something, chatting with someone, or just‬
‭pulling attention from the work), when the class activity requires the use of the computer, or‬
‭when they are done with all work and have no assignments to catch up on. If a device is seen at‬
‭other times a warning will be issued twice before the device will be taken for the remainder of‬
‭class. If the behavior continues a parent and/or an administrator will be brought into the loop.‬

‭Let's make this semester the best it can be together!‬
