Algebra 1
2024-2025
Hello Students and Parents,
elcome to Algebra 1! So excited to be teaching this course which will be covering lots of fun
W
and exciting topics. We will cover linear equations and inequalities, solving linear systems,
polynomial operations, exponents, factoring, and so much more. This course is going to push
students to connect with the content in many different ways, from solo or group work to in-depth
projects, to construct the ideas of concepts we are learning.
I believe that learning math is important for learning problem solving skills, perseverance, and
knowing that making mistakes is great for learning. Teaching is meant to support students'
learning, not control it, so I open up the class for questions and learning from each other as well
as from lectures. We are all working towards the understanding of the same topics, so let’s learn,
make connections, and make mistakes together. My expectations are a bit high, but I know that
all my students can rise to the occasion. As your teacher I want to respect your time and hope
that you will do the same for me. My door is always open and I encourage you to ask questions
during and after class about any problems or additional help you may need to thrive in this class.
Classroom Expectations
e will be making up our own list in class for expectations of how we interact with each other
W
and what we should be doing during class to facilitate the best learning environment and what
that all looks like, but some basic rules I have:
● Learning tools are not toys but devices to assist learning
● Respect all of the students and adults that come into the class
● When class starts at the bell be ready with your pencil and binder on your desk
● Cellphones are only allowed when working independently or when specifically directed
to use them for an activity *policy will go deeper in depth is section on cell phones*
Info on Grading
Grades will be a culmination ofquizzes, activities, notebook checks, and projects.
A: 100-85
B: 84-75
C: 74-65
D: 64-55
Grading assignments everyday seems a bit much, so each day there will be an activity that is
graded for completion the next day on a sheet given each week. Grading of those sheets will be 2
stamps for completed work, 1 stamp for half done, and no stamps if not attempted. The sheet will
have problems on the back over what has been covered that will be graded when turned in.
Notebook checkswill happen every 2-3 weeks to see if all the activities and week sheets are in
their binders for 5 points total each check.
Projectswill happen every three units or so involving work time in class and possibly outside of
class to get a deeper understanding of the concepts of that unit and each project is worth 30
points each.
Quizzesare given at the end of each unit with ample time to study and use of class notes will be
permitted. Quizzes are out of 50 points and each week's sheet is for 10 points (7 for problems
and 3 for stamps).
Extra Credit
xtra credit will be built into quizzes as a possibility to gain points back. There will be 1-2
E
challenge problems on each quiz in case students want to go a little further and try a problem that
shows a deeper understanding of the content.
