DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9

Crafted for Demonstration Teaching

Pre-service Teacher : Kingdon Van C. Laggui Grade Level : Grade 9

Cooperating Teacher : Frazcel P. Serna Learning Area : Science
School : Lal-lo National High School Date : 02-07-2024
Quarter : Third Index of Mastery :

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard : Understanding the concept of valence electrons and
their role in chemical bonding.

B. Performance Standard : Students should demonstrate proficiency in

identifying the number of valence electrons in
elements and understanding their significance in
chemical reactions and bonding.

C. Learning Competency : By the end of the lesson, students should be able to

analyze the relationship between the number of
valence electrons and the reactivity of elements.

D. Learning Objectives

After undergoing varied activities within a 55-minute demonstration teaching, the Grade 9 SSC
students of Lal-lo National High School, with at least an 80 percent index of mastery, must be
able to:

i define valence electrons and explain its importance.

ii identify the number of valence electrons in a given element based on its position in the
periodic table
iii discuss how the number of valence electrons influences the reactivity and chemical
properties of elements
iv describe the Lewis Dot Structure
v illustrate the concept of Valence electrons and Lewis Dot Structure

II. SUBJECT MATTER

III. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

Methodology Teacher’s Activities Learners’ Activities
A. Everyday Routine
A.1. Good morning class!
Greetings Good morning sir!
How are you?
We’re okay sir.
A.2. Prayer Let’s all stand and feel the presence of
the Lord.

Jazmine, kindly lead the prayer.

Amen!

Amen!

A.3.Checkin Who is absent today?

g of None sir, we’re all present in today’s
Attendance lecture class

Alright, excellent, keep it up!

Alright, before we begin our next

A.4. Priming topic, is there any clarification about
Activity our last topic?
None so far sir!

Okay then, we may now proceed with

our new topic.

B. Engage

B.1. Giving an
example of
Electronic and
Lewis Dot
Structure.

B.2. Actual
activity Name the part of the this structure!
(Valence electrons)
(Student will identify its part)

Very good!

I will introduce the part of the

structure:

The orbits are also called valance

shells, in the valence shell, inside the
shell there are electrons inside it.

Here in the structure of the Potassium,

it has 4 valance shells.

And in the first shell the capacity it

can hold is 2, and the second shell
holds a maximum of 8 electrons, and
the third shell also holds 8 electrons,
and the outermost shells only hold 1
valence electron.

1, 8, 8, 2 core electrons are only

applicable in the first 20 elements,
other elements can have 1, 8, 8, 18 in
their valence shell.

Did you understand it class?

Yes sir.

How about on the Lewis dot structure,

did you notice? It has one dot sir.

Okay, where do you think it came

from or where it was based from?

Looking in the structure of the

Potassium, is there any resemblance
between the two?
Sir the dot came from the outermost
shell of the potassium, which has one
valence electron.

Very good observation!

Remember, that the Lewis dot
structure only shows or represent the
valence electron of an element.

C. Explore
Let’s proceed to the other activity.

Search for a pair to have a companion

doing your activity!

I have here 20 first elements cards for

you to choose, and you will pick an
element for you to construct its
valence electron and plot its Lewis dot
structure.

You need to complete it in under 10

minutes.

(Students will share their answers in

front, and illustrate the valence electron
and Lewis dot structure on the board)

D. Explain
We will now proceed in our
discussion.

Kindly read the first slide Jazmine.

s
Thank you, Jazmine!
The red dots indicate the valence
electron.

Also, under the valence electron are

the core electrons that is located in the
inner electron shells that under the
outmost shell.

Read the next slide Akeelah.

Why these elements that belongs to

the Noble Gases are inert?

What is the reason?

Anyone? Sir, because of the number of their

valance electron!

Very good!

The reason why that the Noble gasses

elements are inert is because of their
valence electron, they have 8 valence
electrons, which mean they’re stable
and non-reactive.
In the part where the transition metals
family, has 1 or 2 valence electrons in
their outmost shell.

Like I said ago, an element that has 8

valence electrons are stable and does
not react with the other elements.

Let’s look at the example, Na has 1

valence electron, and its electronic
configuration ends with 3s1
So, the superscript or the number of
electrons in the orbital is 1, and
therefore its valence electron is 1, and
remember that the Lewis dot structure
will only show the electrons that are
located in the outermost shell.

That is why the Na has only one dot.

For example:

Elements X provides us how to plot its

dot.
Try this!

Plot the dot, identify how many

valence electrons does the element
has!

E. Elaborate
(Groupings)

Scandium and Titanium, apply the 2,

8, 8, 18 electron shell configurations.

And illustrate their figure, the valence

electron and the Lewis dot structure.
