3- Mosaic and Terrazzo flooring

Mosaic
• Made of small pieces of broken tiles of china
glazed/cement/marble arranged in different
pattern.
• Tiles used are available in a variety of patterns
and colours.
• Commonly used in operation theatres, temples,
bathrooms and superior type of building floors

The disadvantages of mosaic flooring


The maintenance work that is to be done in the
mosaic flooring takes up a lot of time and
money

Terrazzo
• It is made up of marble chips or stone laid on thin layer of concrete topping. Very
decorative and has good wearing properties.
• Used in residential buildings, hospitals, offices, schools and other public buildings.
• Terrazzo is a flooring material traditionally made by exposing marble chips on the
surface of concrete and then polishing until smooth.

4- BRICK FLOORING
▪ Brick products have been used for many centuries throughout the world for applications such
as roads, flooring, monuments, side walks and building structures.

▪ Bricks are considered to be the oldest manufactured building material that has been trusted
throughout history because of its durability and practical qualities.

• Cheaper than Cement concrete,
wooden, mosaic flooring. • Slightly Uneven (Not level) when laid.
• Provides a non slippery and fire • The resulting surface is not smooth and is rough.

5- CEMENT CONCRETE FLOORING
▪ Consists of cement concrete(1:2:4)
▪ thickness of 25,40 or 50mm.
▪ Laid over base concrete after proper sub
base preparation

▪QUALITIES
▪ Smooth, hard and pleasing in apperance.
▪ Posses good durablity.
▪ Economical.
▪ Does not required proper maintenance.
▪ Required skilled labor.
▪ Does not equalize the temperature.
▪ Can be easily cleaned
▪ Can carry expected loading and traffic.
DISADVANTAGES
• Defect once developed cannot be
easily corrected
• Does not provide heat and sound
insulation
• It cannot be satisfactorily repaired
by patch work

CEMENT CONCRETE FLOORING


6- TIMBER FLOORING
❑Timber flooring is any product manufactured
from timber that is designed for use as flooring, either
structural or aesthetic.
❑common choice as a flooring material due to its
environmental profile, durability, and restorability.
❑Used in interiors as well as exteriors.
❑These are also easy to match to nearly any home style and
design. There are a lot of styles, colours and species of
timber flooring available than ever before.
There are different type of wooden flooring:-
▪ STRIP FLOORING :- this type of flooring consists of narrow
and thin strip of wood joined to each other by tongue and groove joint.
▪ PLANKED FLOORING :- in this type of flooring , wider
planks are used and these are also tongued and grooved.
▪ [Solid (Hardwood) and Engineered]
Over the finished floor, wooden planks with tongue and groove are placed.

The tongue and groove are jotted into each other similarly the whole flooring is laid.
ADVANTAGES
•Scratch (cut) resistant
•Not much polishing required.
•Does not damage the sub floor.
• Easier to clean
• Appearance :look good both in contemporary and traditional interior design.

DISADVANTAGES

Costlier than other flooring


Maintenance problems
Cannot be used where there is heavy traffic.
7- GLASS FLOORING
❑ GLASS FLOORING It is used where light is to be transmitted from upper floor to
lower floor.
❑ Structural glass is available in the form of tiles or slabs. Its thickness varies from 12
to 30 mm. These slabs or tiles are fixed in closely spaced frames.
❑ It is very costly and therefore not commonly used.
8- P.V.C. (Polyvinyl chloride)FLOORING:
1-8 VINYL FLOORING
•This is a type of vinyl tile or sheet.

Uses:
• Generally used in hospitals where much
of cleanliness is required. Sheet
• It is installed in children rooms to avoid
accidents.
• It is installed in blood banks.
• It is also installed in hotels , homes
where ever desired

Tiles
2-8 PLASTIC
❑ PLASTIC FLOORING It is made of plastic material fabricated in the form of tiles of
different sizes and colour shades.
❑ The tiles are laid on concrete base. The floor is washed with warm soap water before
use. It is resilient, smooth, good looking and can be cleaned easily.
❑ It is costly and slippery and is damaged when comes in contact with burning objects.
3-8 RUBBER FLOORING
• It consists of sheets or tiles of rubber, in
variety of patterns and colours with thickness
varying from 3 to 10 mm.
• The sheets are fixed to the concrete floor with
the help of appropriate adhesives.
• Rubber floorings are resilient and noise proof.
• They are costly, hence used in public
buildings or offices

9- SEAMLESS CHEMICAL FLOORING
• Many different seamless flooring materials are
available. These are usually
latex, polyester, urethane or epoxy compounds
which are applied in liquid form to provide a
completely seamless floor covering.

• These are usually found in wet areas such as


laboratories or food processing plants.
