Piping Latrolets Mechanical Integrity Assessment

The Issue
Concerns arose about the mechanical integrity of a latrolets piping components, then
numerical simulations were conducted to assess the system accoridng to applicable codes
requirements.

The Code Assessment

ASME B31.3 Process Piping code refers to ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 2 Part 5 code
for verifications “by analysis” of pressure components.

Piping Latrolets Mechanical Integrity Assessment

3D Model & Boundary Conditions

The component is modeled together with the piping to which it is connected, of adequate
length to correctly identify the range of displacements and stresses.

3D Model & Boundary Conditions

Internal pressure and external loads (axial force and bending moment estimated by the
equivalent pressure method) are modeled, as welle as the equivalent pressure thrusts.

External Loads Combnination as per Equivalent Pressure

Case NPS 1-1/2" NPS 2"
Design Pressure PD 0.97 0.97 Mpa
Axial Force FE 14 25 N
Bending Moment ME 28 50 Nm
Gasket Mean Diameter G 62 77.9 mm
Equivalent Pressure PE 1.57 1.51 Mpa
Pressure Rating PR 1.03 1.03 MPa
Rating-Equivalent Ratio 1.5 1.5

N.B.: weld overlay not included

within mechanical assessment.

Piping Latrolets Mechanical Integrity Assessment

Resulting Stress Field - General

The level of global and local stresses is definitely low.

6
Piping Latrolets Mechanical Integrity Assessment

Resulting Stress Field - Sections

Stress distribution within thicknesses is low-level, fairly homogeneous, and free of
worrisome peaks.

Stress Linearisation & Categorisation (1/5)

As required by ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 2 Part 5, Stress Linearisation Lines (SCL)
are selected for stress categorisation ad subsequent assessment.

Deformation level is very low (please consider that all deformation shapes shown in
pictures are exaggerated for clarity).

Conclusions
Global and local stress levels are verified by a wide margin against code
allowable, then the component can be considered intact and safe when subjected
to considered internal pressure and external loads.
