Q11. A small bar magnet is dropped through different hollow copper tubes with same length
and inner diameter but with different outer diameter. The variation in the time (t) taken
for the magnet to reach the bottom of the tube depends on its wall thickness  d  as

(a) (b)

t t

d d

(c) (d)

d d

Ans: (c)
Solution.:
If a bar magnet is dropped through a hollow copper tube, then the magnetic flux linked with the
metal tube changes and hence eddy currents are generated in the body of the tube.
According to Lenz’s Law, eddy currents oppose the falling of magnetic bar. Due to this the bar
magnet experiences retarding force that is proportional to the strength of magnetic field, the area
of the loop, the rate of change of flux and inversely proportional to the resistivity of the material.
l
R , if A ,   , then retarding force is large so it will take more time to reach the bottom

In a p-type semiconductor Fermi-level is near valance band at lower temperature. As temperature
increases Fermi-level moves towards middle of the band gap.

Relationship between Fermi level  EF  and the intrinsic Fermi level EFi   in term of hole
concentration  p0  and intrinsic carrier concentration  ni  for p  type semiconductor is

p 
EFi  EF  kBT ln  0 
 ni 
At lower temperature p0  ni , thus EFi  EF

At high temperature, ni increases and at very high temperature ni  p0

 EFi  EF  0  EF  EFi . Therefore, with increasing temperature, E F moves closer to the E Fi .

Thus, the correct option is (a).
