The charging equations for the voltage and current of the two capacitors are

given below. Note that the value of R and of C can be the results of the
combination of various resistors and capacitors in a circuit.
Vc = E(1 - et/RC)V and ic = (et/RC)A
The duration of the charging process, equal to about five-times constants, 5 .
This is defined as the transient response of the circuit. At its end, the voltage
across the capacitors is equal to the source voltage. In the case of circuit i
Figure 1, it is equal to 12V
The behavior of all the circuits used in this experiment is governed by the
charging equation listed above. The values of R and C depend upon the the
particular circuit used. final voltage across the capacitors may differ from
that of the source voltage due to the particular topography of a circuit.
4. Charging Network (parallel Capacitors)
4.1 Construct the network of figure 1. measure and record resistance and
capacitance values

4.2 Calculate the total capacitance for the network using the measured
capacitance levels. Record in Table 1

4.3 Determine the time constant for the network and record it in Table 1
4.4 Calculate the charging time (5 ) for the voltage across the capacitor, CT
and record it in Table 1

CT 5
3.04 30 s 150 s

4.5 Take the video of the timer and the DMM screen to record the voltage
across the capacitor at the time intervals appearing in Table 2 after the
switch is closed. Make a test run before recording the actual levels.
Complete the table using the fact that VR = E – VC

4.6 the graph below shows curves of vc and vR versus time

4.7What is the level of vc after the one time constant (from the graph).
Record it table 3. is this the level of 63.2% of the final steady state, as
indicated by theory

4.8 record the level of vc after time constant in table 3. Does the level
of vc suggest that the major portion of the transient phase has passed
after five-time constants?

4.9 write the mathematical equation for the voltage vc during the
charging phase
4.10 Determine the voltage vc at t = 25 s by substituting the time into
the proceeding mathematical equation expression and performing the
required math computation and record it in table 3

4.11 determine vc at t = 25 s from the vc curve of graph 1 and record it

in table 3. How do the calculated and measured levels of vc at t = 25 s
compare?
