PARTS and Functions OF MS EXCEL WINDOW
MS Excel is a powerful spreadsheet program developed by Microsoft that is widely used for data analysis,
reporting, and budgeting. A spreadsheet or worksheet is a file made of rows , columns and cells that
help sort, organize, and arrange data efficiently, and calculate numerical data. What makes a
spreadsheet software program unique is its ability to calculate values using mathematical formulas
and the data in cells.
BASIC PARTS OF MS EXCEL WINDOW—COMPONENTS OF MS EXCEL

WINDOW ICONS DESCRIPTION

Title bar-The title bar displays both the name of the application and the
name of the spreadsheet.
Menu bar-The menu bar displays all of the menus available for use in
Excel . The contents of any menu can be displayed by left-clicking the
menu name
Formatting buttons in Excel- Changing default formats includes things
like changingthe font color,style ,size,text alignment in a cell or apply
formatting effects
Column headings-Each Excel spreadsheet contains 256 columnsand it
run vertically downward across the worksheet and ranges from A to
XFD. Each column is named by a letter or combination of letters.
(Row Bar)Row headings- Each spreadsheet contains 65,536 rows, it
run horizontally across the worksheet. Each row is named by a
number that is on left side of the row.

Name box- This shows the address of the current selection or active
cell.
Name Box- is a small input box located to the left of the formula bar. It
typically displays the active cell’s address.
Formula bar- The formula bar displays information entered—or being
entered as you type—in the current or active cell. The contents of a
cell can also be edited in the formula bar.

FILE Tab-Where you can see the previous opened or saved filescreate
a new document, print a document, and do other operations
The Excel Cell- A cell is an intersection of a column and row. Each cell
has a unique cell address. In the picture , the cell address of the
selected cell is B3. The heavy border around the selected cell is called
the cell pointer.

(Active Sheets)Navigation buttons and sheet tabs- Allow you to move
to another worksheet in an Excel workbook. They are used to display
the first, previous, next, and last worksheets in the workbook.

The vertical scroll bar located along the right edge of the screen is
used to move up or down the spreadsheet. The horizontal scroll bar
located at the bottom of the screen is used to move left or right across
the spreadsheet.
(View Buttons)-Page layout view-Page break preview-View displays
pages exactly as they will show in print.
 Zoom button-Allows you to resize the document to view it
 Control Buttons-It allows to performs three commands i.e.,
minimize, maximize, and close the document or file.
 Quick Access Toolbars-see some commands like undo
/redo,save,new,open

 Status bar-It is located at the bottom of the document and

displays the information related to spreadsheet
 Dialog box launcher-A a small arrow in the lower-right corner of
many groups on the Ribbon that display some commands
