The Antihyperglycemic property of Syzygium

Aromaticum (clove) powder extract on blood glucose

levels in albino mice
CHAPTER I

Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease involving abnormally high amounts of

glucose present in the blood. It presents a notable escalation in the cost of healthcare,
given that individuals with diabetes are more likely to have both immediate and long-
term problems, as well as premature death. According to (Mehra, 2022), medicinal
therapies, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle modifications are often part of a multi-modal
approach to managing diabetes. However, medication costs are excessively high, which
puts a burden on patients while considering the financial stability that only a limited
number of people can access affordable healthcare services. Additionally, alternative
medicine became an option for those with diabetes because it cost much less as an
herbal medicine than traditional medication.

Syzygium aromaticum (clove) in Urdu, also called “laung” is an herbal plant that
belongs to the species aromaticum, genus Syzygium, and family Myrtacea (Yadav,
2020). With the rising medical cost of diabetes mellitus, researchers are likely to
investigate accessible and affordable alternative treatments for diabetes. S. Aromaticum
shows indications of eugenol that may potentially boost the activities of enzymes for
glucose metabolism, and the prudent are extending the scope of eugenol used in a trial
to alleviate the adverse effects of diabetes (Srinivasan S. et al., 2013). Furthermore,
metabolic disorders demand long-term medication, which requires patients to invest
their money and time in order to access traditional medication. However, researchers
proposed an alternative herbal plant that could potentially help manage the amount of
glucose in the blood.
The fundamental goal of this study is to comprehensively investigate the dietary
management of S. Aromaticum as an antihyperglycemic agent that can potentially
decrease a high blood glucose level. The researchers aimed to ascertain the breadth of
the S. Aromaticum has antihyperglycemic properties. In conclusion, the result of the
study will provide valuable insights on the said herbal plant for evaluating hyperglycemia
and diabetes treatment.

Statement of the Problem:

The overall purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of Syzugium

Aromaticum (clove) as antihyperglycemic powdered extract.

1.) What was the experimental subjects’ blood glucose level before
and two weeks after they were given different concentrations of powdered clove
extract?

2.) Is there a difference in the experimental subjects’ blood glucose

levels before and after two weeks of varying concentrations of powdered
Syzugium Aromaticum (clove)?

3.) What effect does the weight of the experimental subjects have
before and after two weeks of varying concentrations of powdered extract of
Syzugium Aromaticum (clove)?
Hypothesis

The study on the Antihyperglycemic property of Syzygium Aromaticum (clove)

powder extract on blood glucose level on albino mice where tested using the 0.01 level
of significance:

Null Hypothesis

H⁰: There is no significant difference on the blood glucose level of the

experimental subject before and after receiving varied concentrations of clove powder.

H⁰: There is significant difference between the weight after receiving varied
concentrations of clove powder.

Alternative Hypothesis

H¹: There is a significant difference on the blood glucose level of the

experimental subject before and after receiving varied concentrations of clove powder.

H¹: There is a significant difference between the weight after receiving varied
concentrations of clove powder.
Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to examine the possible Antihyperglycemic effects of Syzygium

Aromaticum powder extract from dried clove flower bud. The study measured the blood
glucose levels to assess the effectivity of S. Aromaticum in decreasing the high amount
of sugar in the blood while being guaranteed to maintain the blood sugar level through
series of test, whereas the experimental subjects will undergo fasting overnight before
the blood test is extracted.

Furthermore, the extraction of S. Aromaticum powder extract is gradually the

same in the previous studies but only differ in the amount of vials an experimental
subject will be treated. However, the study only scrutinize the subtle effect of S.
Aromaticum on hyperglycaemia and diabetes treatment. Lastly, the study only focused
on the antihyperglycemic effect of the S. Aromaticum powder extract without further
discussion of the possible health benefits or impediments of this herbal medicine.

Significance of the Study

The study about the antihyperglycemic effect of syzygium aromaticum (clove)

has significant implications for the following:

Health organizations. Throughout this study, may acquaint health organizations’

solutions for diabetes management and prevention, potentially lessen the burden.

Students and Teachers. This study will provide them with the opportunity and
information they need to help other diabetics using the syzygium aromaticum (clove).
Society. Through this study, society will be able to aware about another
alternative medication for diabetics and will be guided to use this syzygium aromaticum
(clove) in persons with diabetes.

Diabetic Patients. This study will be more in line with the cognizant behavior of
diabetic patients when it comes to preventing diabetes. And with the alternate drug, he
or she will pay a lower payment, which will also help reduce the disease.

Future Researchers. This study will bring advancement of knowledge for future
researchers. The study’s findings will be their source for antihyperglycemic property.
