What is the discount?

● A discount is a deduction from the usual price of something.
In dealing with discounts, there are terms that should be remembered.
1. Original Price (OP)- initial price set to an item or services.
2. Discount Rate (DR)- the amount of money reduced from the list priced expressed
as a percentage.
3. Sale Price (SP)- the price at which the item is sold after the discount has been
deducted.

Real-World Problems Involving Discount

Sample Problem #1:

II. LESSON 1. The human-sized unicorn stuff toy priced at ₱ 7,850 is marked 15% off.
PROPER How much is the discount?

Formula:
Discount = Original Price x Discount Rate
D=OP x DR

Solution:
Find the given:
OP= ₱ 7,850
DR= 15%
D=?

Solution:
D= ₱ 7,850 x 15
= ₱ 7,850 x 0.15
= ₱ 1, 177.5
7

The discount for a human-sized unicorn is ₱ 1, 177.5.

However, if the Original Price and Sale Price is given, use the formula:

Discount = Original Price - Sale Price

D= OP- SP

Sample Problem # 2:
2. A diamond necklace that usually sells at ₱ 10, 500 is marked sale at 10%
off. What is the sale price?

If the sale price is unknown, two (2) formulas could be used.

1st Formula:
SP = OP x (100% - DR)

Find the given:

OP= ₱ 10, 500
DR= 10%
SP=?

Solution:
SP= ₱ 10, 500 x (100% - 10%)
= ₱ 10, 500 x 90%
= ₱ 10, 500 x 0.90
SP = ₱ 9,450

2nd Formula:
Sale Price = Original Price - Discount
SP= OP- D
Solution:
Find the given:
OP= ₱ 10, 500
DR= 10%
D=?
SP=?

In the second formula, the value of discount should be solved first.

Solution (for discount):

D= OP x DR
= ₱ 10, 500 x 10% (0.10)
8

D = ₱ 1, 050
The discount for the diamond necklace is ₱ 1, 050.00.

Solution (for sale price):

SP = ₱ 10, 500 - ₱ 1, 050

SP = ₱ 9,450

The sale price for the diamond necklace is ₱ 9,450.

Sample Problem #3
3. To thank their loyal customers for the past 10 years, a clothing line in Cavite
offers a one-week sale. Most of the clothes went from ₱ 3,000 to ₱ 2,150 only.
Find out the discount rate.

Formula:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡
Discount Rate = 𝑂𝑟𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑃𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑒x 100%
𝐷
DR = 𝑂𝑃x100%
Solution:
Find the given:
OP= ₱ 3,000
SP= ₱ 2, 150
D=?
DR=?

Solution (for discount):

D= OP - SP
= ₱ 3,000 - ₱ 2,150
D=₱ 850
The discount they offer is ₱ 850.00.

Solution (for discount rate):

𝐷
DR = 𝑂𝑃x100%
₱ 850
= x100
₱ 3,000
= 0.2833 x100
DR = 28.33%
The discount rate for the clothes is 28.33%.

Sample Problem #4:

4. Maricar saved ₱ 500 pesos when she bought a Korean foundation at a 50%
discount. Determine its original price.

Formula:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡
Original Price= 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑒
𝐷
OP= 𝐷𝑅
Solution:
Find the given:
OP=?
D= ₱ 500
DR= 50%

Solution:
𝐷
OP= 𝐷𝑅
₱ 500
= 50%
₱ 500
= 0.50
OP = ₱ 1, 000

The original price of the Korean foundation is ₱ 1, 000

Sample Problem #5:

5. Maricar bought a 50% off Korean foundation at a sale price of ₱ 5000.
Determine its original price.

Formula:
𝑺𝒂𝒍𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆
Original Price= 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝑹𝒂𝒕𝒆
𝑺𝑷
OP= 𝟏𝟎𝟎%𝑫𝑹
Solution:

Find the given:

OP=?
DR= 50%
SP= ₱ 5000

Solution:
𝑆𝑃
OP= 100% (𝐷𝑅)
₱ 5000
= 100% ( 50%)
10

₱ 5000
= 50% (0.50)
OP= ₱ 10,000

The original price of the Korean foundation is ₱ 10,000.
