SOCIAL MEDIA: ANALYSING ITS IMPACT

ON STUDENT’S LIFE

Abstract
The term “social” refers to interacting with other people by sharing information with them and
receiving information from them. The “media” refers to an instrument of communication. Social
media are web-based communication tools that enable people to interact with each other by both
sharing and consuming information. Social networking is a subcategory of social media. Social
media is not just an activity; it is an investment of valuable time and resources.
Importance of social media is an in-thing among the educational sector. These are computer-
mediated tools that allow people or companies to create, share, or exchange information, career
interests, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. The social networking
websites like linkedin, Facebook, twitter and orkut etc. are continuously distracting students
from their studies. The main focus of student should be education but unfortunately today’s
student are emphasizing on such sites which can be a complete wastage of time. There are
several negative effects of social media which receive criticism, for example regarding privacy
issues, Internet frauds etc. This paper focuses on analyzing the impact of social networks on the
life of student’s or teenagers.

Introduction

The "social" part refers to interacting with other people by sharing information with them and
receiving information from them. The "media" part refers to an instrument of communication.
Social media are web-based communication tools that enable people to interact with each other
by both sharing and consuming information. Social media is a concept that has given people a
common platform for sharing their news, views and opinions regarding the happenings around
them. It is also being used by the advertisers and companies for their promotions, professionals
for searching and recruiting, students for internships etc.
Social media involves use of an online platform or website that enables people to communicate,
usually for a social purpose, through a variety of services, most of which are web-based and offer
opportunities for people are interact over the internet, e.g. via e-mail and ‘instant messaging. A
lot of people user the terms social media and social networking understand as if they mean the
exact same thing. Although there are major difference between them but actually they’re not the
same. Social networking is really a subcategory of social media.
The easiest way to understand the difference between social media and social networking is by
thinking about the terms "media" and "networking" separately. Media refers to the information
you're actually sharing Networking, on the other hand, has to do with who your audience is and
the relationships you have with them.

• Blogs (Twitter)
• Social Networking Sites (Facebook, Google+)
• Shopping Sites (Amazon)
• Multimedia Sharing (YouTube, Flickr)[1]

Use of social media as an education tool:


 Social media is not going away: Social media is the latest thing that is being used in
the innovative way for education purpose. Students should be taught to use this tool
in a better way in the educational classes that just being used for messaging or texting
rather they should learn to use media for good.
 When kids are engaged they learn better: Students just don’t learn while writing on a
piece of paper but it is also important to involve more practical work When they are
engaged better, they tend to learn more in practical classes by implementing their
theory rules.
 3. Safe social media tools are available: Kidblog.org is one of many free tools that
allow teachers to control an online environment while still benefiting from social
media. The teachers should educate the students to how to use the social media for
better purposes.
 4. Social Media encourages collaboration instead of groups: Social media as a
teaching tool has a natural collaborative element. Student’s analysis and comment on
each other’s assignments work in teams to create content and can easily access each
other and the teacher with questions or to start a discussion.[2]

Importance of social media


 Connectivity: Social media networks are designed for the purpose of communal
connections. These platforms are used by students to connect among themselves,
institutes constantly communicate through websites, social media presence sharing
relevant information. Having an online presence helps strengthen connectivity without
any limitations on proximity.

 Community building: A great way to reach out to potential students and professionals. It
gives a chance to network with different industry experts and faculty of different
institutions, social media can provide a better industry exposure.

 Stimulate Knowledge and discussion: There is constant Sharing of information, content


on Social media, giving and receiving information at rapid speeds. These include views
and opinions, knowledge and many more. Social media provides platform to assess,
analyze, retain and share information on a widespread.

 Parental involvement: When it comes to engaging parents and encouraging them for
their involvement, social media networks prove to be valuable tool for education
institutes. Having an online presence through social media, Parents can easily access and
view institute’s curriculum, understand class and teachers better. This helps them get
clarity about the educational institute.

 Visibility Advantage: According to IMAI (Internet and Mobile association of India) ,


65% of the population go online to search educational content. Thus institutes with online
presence have an advantage of being more visible. Also, having an online presence often
contribute towards a positive approach towards the institute.[3,4]
Some reasons why people criticize others on social media
 A desire to opening all the unhappiness and discontent they are feeling in their lives by
projecting their negative cases on someone else.
 To express anger and disappointment when celebrities fall off a base, revealing
imperfections such as marriage failure or substance addition.
 Rage their jealousy at people who have what they don’t have such as reputation.
 An obligation to overcome low self-confidence by acting superior to others and putting
them down.
 Feelings of crime that their core values have been violated and need to be defended.[5]

Opportunities of social media


 Aggregating images and information to share with classmates or with interest groups that
cut across courses and institutions.
 Gathering and sharing data collected with mobile devices during field work or travel
abroad.
 Creating a public profile to showcase personal research interests and to connect with a
broad audience.
 Using Twitter in class to keep students engaged and to get a sense of what students are
thinking about during lectures.
 Forming student study groups with the use of Google+ Hangouts and other social tools.
 Adding social tools to e-textbooks.[6]

Impact of social media

Positive Impact:
 With Social Networks they are able to communicate with their friends whom are unable
to meet personally. It also helps in maintaining better relationship with friends.
 They can communicate their thoughts and perceptions over different topics with a large
no. of users, and raise their voice also.
 It helps in creating awareness among the mass.
 Social Networking web sites help in education by allowing students and teachers in one
platform.
 Students get closer to art and design, and are exposed continuously to new ideas, given a
big chance to feed their creativity.
 Students can get up-to-date and recent information from Social Media.[7]

Negative Impact:
 Students get addicted towards Social Media, instead of spending time with family in
leisure period; they prefer chatting with online friends and unknown faces.
 They more time students spend on social sites, the less they spend socializing person.
Students who spend a great deal of time on social networking are less able to effectively
communicate with person. They also spend less time with family.
 The attention to details, attention to pronunciation and grammar, have declined
drastically, because most of the students do not write complete sentence, use proper
grammatical method while writing text/message.
 77.27% students maintain privacy while uploading photos and videos in Social
Networking Sites; this can lead to criminal activity.
 The reveals that the active involvement of students on social sites while study results in
reduction in their focus of attention. Consequently, their academic performances decline.

Conclusion

Social media with advanced technology in changing people’s lives more convenient and faster.
Also social media is still positive in spite of some negative things. Social media is a tool which is
amazing and powerful. At the same time it is manageable for people. The educational system, as
one of the fundamental institutions of modern society, consequently is strongly affected by these
changes.

Social media addiction will be rise in future. Disadvantage of social media addiction on health,
workplace, education and social life will be increase by the end of 2020. In particular, many
social media platforms are not able to provide learning opportunities that are in line with
established best practices for professional development .In particularly the ability to create
contextualized hands-on learning opportunities. Due to lack of trained person of handling social
media in India, misuse of social media is a challenge of government. In the last few years social
media have become an important communication channel in India and global.
