9.1 Introduction

• Total Station or Total Station Theodolite (TST) is an electronic / optical

instrument used in modern surveying and building construction.

• It uses electronic transit theodolite in conjunction with electronic

distance meter (EDM).

• It is also integrated with microprocessor, electronic data collector and

storage system.

• Data collected from total station can be downloaded into

computer/laptops for further processing of information.

• The instrument can be used to measure horizontal and vertical

angles as well as sloping distance of object to the instrument.
Parts of Total Station
9.2 Features of total station
1. The theodolite is offering a complete product family. It is
easy for a user switch between models without learning a
new operation.
2. Absolute circle reading.
3. Excellent hardware features, such as laser plummet,
endless drives on both. 11. Graphic sketches.
4. Sides for Hz and V, brilliant optics with 30x magnification 12 Hassle-free EDM measurement with red

5. New and intuitive software. 13. Enter the data at the office and simply
call it up at the site.
6. Unique leveling guidance for fast and convenient setup.
14. Upload and transfer data via on board
7. High resolution LCD display.
data connection.
8. Audible notice for 90° turns and layout.
15.Data editing and exchange in total
9.Electronic laser distance measurement. stations.
10. Free set-up possible straight from blueprint. 16. Connectively to 3rd party devices.
9.3 Advantages of Total Station

i) Quick setting of the instrument on the tripod using laser

plummets.
ii) On-board area computation programme to compute the
area of the field.
iii) Greater accuracy in area computation because of the
possibility of taking arcs in area computation.
iv) Graphical view of plots and land for quick visualization.
v) Enormous plotting and area computation at any user
required scale.
vi) Automation of old maps
vii) Full GIS creation (using map info software)
viii) Local language support
9.4 Disadvantages of Total Station

i) Their use does not provide hard copies of field notes. Hence, it may be difficult for
the surveyor to look over and check the work while surveying.

ii) For an overall check of the survey, it will be necessary to return to the office and
prepare the drawings using appropriate software.

ii) The instrument is costly and for conducting surveys using total station, skilled
personnel are required.
9.5 Applications of Total Station

i) Detail survey i.e., data collection.

ii) Control Survey (Traverse).

iii) Height measurement (Remove elevation

measurement- REM).

iv) Fixing of missing pillars (or) Setting out (or) Stake

out.

v) Resection.

vi) Area calculations, etc.

vii) Remote distance measurement (RDM) or Missing

line measurement (MLM).
