The Ghost of Anne Boleyn

The ghost of Anne Boleyn is said to be the most travelled spirit in Britain as, if the
legends are true, there are at least five locations where her ghost is said to appear.

King Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn shortly after he was divorced from his first wife,
Catherine of Aragon. Soon afterwards, Anne gave birth to a baby girl who would
5 become a future monarch - Elizabeth I. Henry was very disappointed to have had a
daughter but hoped a son would soon follow. Three years passed, after which Anne
had still failed to produce a son and heir, so Henry had her tried for high treason and
she was sent to the Tower of London to be executed by beheading on 19th May 1536.

The most spectacular ghost story relating to Anne Boleyn occurred at arguably the
10 most haunted place in Britain, the Tower of London, in 1884. A guard noticed a light
flickering in the locked Chapel Royal late one night. He tried to uncover the source of
the light by climbing up a ladder and peering through a window. The shocked guard
was astonished to see a procession of knights and ladies dressed in medieval costumes
pacing the chapel. Their leader was an elegant woman whose face he could not see
15 but whose figure resembled that of Anne Boleyn’s in portraits he had seen. They
disappeared as they neared the altar. In 1864, a young soldier on duty in the same
chapel made another sighting of Anne’s ghost. He claimed to have confronted and
quickly challenged a white figure and, when he received no response, he plunged his
bayonet into the eerie figure. To his complete shock, the weapon went straight
20 through the terrifying apparition. In 1817, a young sentry patrolling the White Tower
(where Anne happily feasted with members of court and lodged the night before her
coronation) was so shocked that he suffered a fatal heart attack after encountering a
ghostly Anne on one of the many staircases.

The ghost of Anne Boleyn has also been seen numerous times walking from the
25 Queen’s House to the Chapel of Saint Peter ad Vincula, where she glides down the
aisle to her grave under the altar.

Windsor Castle was built over a millennium ago and is one of the oldest continuously
occupied royal castles in the world. Guests of the late Queen Elizabeth II have often
reported seeing the ghost of Anne Boleyn standing at the window in the Dean’s
30 Cloister. She is said to have a despondent, wistful expression and is occasionally seen
to be weeping.

It is thought that a manor house in Essex is where King Henry VIII first cast his eyes on
a young Anne Boleyn; according to a previous owner of Rochford Hall, there are
stories of sightings of a headless lady and feelings of extreme cold in several of the
35 upstairs rooms.

Anne’s ghost is also said to return annually to her birthplace, Blickling Hall, on the
exact anniversary of her death. A carriage comes up the drive leading to the hall,
drawn by six headless horses and driven by a headless coachman. Anne sits inside,
dressed in white and holding her severed head in her lap. When the carriage reaches
40 the large, solid oak doors, the horses and carriage disappear and Anne goes inside to
roam the rooms in the hall until daybreak whereupon she swiftly vanishes.

Anne’s ghost is said to appear each Christmas at Hever Castle, her childhood home.

courtship. Her ghost also reportedly walks across the bridge that crosses over the
Eden in the castle grounds.
