Summary
•Various activities for Solid Waste Eco-literacy are
conducted on the banks of Kukkarahally Lake,Mysore
since 2000.

• Environment quiz, essay, poster competitions under


World Environment Day for Students and Clean Up the
World Campaign for Residents are conducted for over
250 weeks every Sunday.

•Many ward level awareness activities, display of


posters and street play in the Dasara exhibitions during
2004,2005 and 2006 have been implemented.

•A street play “ plastic demon” in Kannada enacted


over 20 times and used in the whole state as a puppet
show under Year of Scientific Awareness’04.

• In this paper documentation of six years Eco-literacy


for Solid Waste Management around Kukkarahalli
Lake and environs are presented.

Background
Waste is a resource in wrong place.
There is nothing like waste in nature.
„ In this community endeavor
five aims of environmental
education, namely
awareness, knowledge,
attitude, skill and
participation are ensured.

„ Further, the premise that “ A


sustainable community
safeguards itself while not
damaging that of others”
(IUCN/UNEP/WWF, 1991) is
earnestly attempted at
community level. First weekly eco-literacy campaign on 15th October 2000

Schedule-I Relates to implementation Schedule

Schedule-II Specifications relating to collection, segregation, storage, transportation,


processing and disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW).
Specifications for landfilling indicating; site selection, facilities at the site,
Schedule-III specifications for landfilling, Pollution prevention, water quality monitoring,
ambient air quality monitoring, Plantation at landfill site, closure of landfill
site and post care .
Schedule-IV Indicate waste processing options including; standards for composting,
treated leachates and incinerations .

a) House hold level

1) 3 members in a house generates 1.00 kg of garbage each day at the rate of 0.35 kg
/day/person
2) For a period of 1 year the generation of garbage will be 365
3) The organic waste will be 70% of the total waste, which is approximately 250 kg.
4) The rest 115 kg will be inorganic waste.
5) If the above organic waste of 250 kg is processed it will reduce to 125 kg due to
decomposition etc.
6) The size of twin tanks of size 2ft*2ft*3ft* will hold 180 kg ( the waste generated in a
period of 6 months)
7) If 1000 houses adopt construction of tanks in their houses 365 tones of garbage can
be dispensed with.( 150 truck loads of transportation can be saved.
8) Economic benefits by production of 125 tones of good manure, if sold at Rs. 2000/ton
amounts to Rs. 2,50,000/- (alternatively the manure can be used for green yard.
9) The savings to the corporation is Rs. 15,000/-/month/houses, now spent by the
Corporation at the tendered rates. Annual savings will be Rs.1, 80.000/-
10) Annually 1/3 acre can be salvaged from the dumping yard.
11) Total benefits by constructing garbage tanks in 1000 houses will be Rs. 4,30,000.
12) The cost of construction of garbage in bricks will be Rs. 1,250/- to Rs.1, 500/- only.

Vana, at Western Bund Entrance, Kukkarahally Lake, Sarawsawthi
Puram, Mysore a sustained lake conservation effort at Mysore lives.

„ We thank all those responsible for this successful effort in the


Kukkarahally lake Environs.
