Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of study

Problem-solving strategy in mathematics is one of the skills and

primary goals of addressing the subject matter. Joaquin (2022) stressed that

in every aspect of human life, there is always a different strategy for how to

solve the problem. This includes daily activities where a person is independent

to do something, the workplace and other subject areas that are dependent on

mathematics. In addition, problem-solving is the ability to emphasize,

enhance, and empower each learner's knowledge and skills in the field of

mathematics. Students stimulate problem-solving through a specific method

of calculation and manipulation, which necessitates a higher level of

understanding and enthusiasm (Lestari and Yudhanegara, 2017).

Furthermore, this will provide insight into the fact that one of the

students is expected to learn is problem-solving, particularly in their own field

of specialization. A rapidly information-based society had an impact on

mathematics programs at various educational levels as of the beginning of the

twenty-first century. Pentang (2021) states that one of the collaborative

learning strategies is the jigsaw strategy. It is an effective method for

improving and enhancing problem-solving in mathematics. Moreover, Abed

(2021) asserted that the jigsaw strategy is another technique that allows

students to express their ideas and have the opportunity to evaluate and

interpret information by analyzing the process of gathering information, which

can help to improve their skills and level of understanding. Domingo Al et al.

(2021) conclude that jigsaw as a learning strategy is a powerful method of

teaching that can encourage students to be energetic and assist each other in

learning the subject matter in order to achieve the greatest success in their

performances.

King (2019) posits that identifying more useful problem-solving

strategies for instruction of students' creativity with a scientific approach to

students' mathematical aptitude in higher-order thinking skills. To develop

their abstract thinking and come up with an original solution. According to

Casing (2018) collaborative learning using the jigsaw strategy has a positive

impact on increasing their level of interest, improving their skills, expanding

their knowledge, and improving their mathematics performance. Areelu and

Ladele (2018) discovered that the jigsaw strategy works as an effective

method of teaching that can easily understand the context and is willing to

learn well. The researchers will identify the strengths and weaknesses; if any

weaknesses are discovered, they will attempt to address them and resolve

the issue through the process of improvement, identifying the areas in which it

has functioned effectively and those in which it needs to improve.

The researchers are third-year mathematics major students of Eastern

Visayas State University Carigara-Campus. Based on their experiences, most

of the students are passive in terms of understanding the problem-solving

process. It is a challenge to understand and learn problem-solving strategies

without the supervision of the teachers, unlike in the traditional approach.

Based on the above premises, it is necessary to identify the effects of

the jigsaw strategy on the students' bachelor in secondary education with a

major in mathematics and whether they have an effect on their academic

performance in the institution. The researchers believe that the pedagogy

skills of teaching are beneficial in improving the academic performance of the

students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand the Effects of Jigsaw Strategy in

Problem solving to the Students’ Academic Performance at Eastern Visayas

State University Carigara-Campus in BSED Math 1st year college students 2nd

semester S.Y 2021-2022. Finding are basis for recommendation and

Conclusion.

The researcher endeavor on finding the answer to the following:

1.What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of :

1.1. Age; and

1.2. Sex?

2. What is the effect of jigsaw strategy to the:

2.1 Experimental Group; and

2.2 Control Group?

3. Is there significant difference on the effect of jigsaw strategy between

experimental and control group?

Significance of the Study

This research titled the effects of jigsaw strategy in problem solving to

the students’ academic performance at Eastern Visayas State University

Carigara-Campus during face to face classes is beneficial to the following;

Students. The result of this study will be beneficial for them in that they

will be informed about the factor of the students that affect their academic

performance specifically cooperative learning in problem solving during actual

session and how effective they are. This will serve them to improve and to

motivate them in a good way to deal with actual knowledge and to promote

them without murmuring and disputing as a result of the students

experiencing slow to come up the topic or problem-solving.

Instructor. This study aims to serve as a wake-up call to teachers to

create and develop easy to-understand strategies for learning method in

actual session, as well as to use appropriate teaching strategies.

To the School. This study will give them insights as to what measures

are appropriate to be taken in order that the students undertaking research in

mathematics 1 and other subjects in learning.

Parents. This study will enable parents to realize their great role in

dealing with their children’s educational needs and support.

Researcher. This study will serve as a tool and reference material that

will help improve the other researchers' studies related to this topic. Its

information and date could be used for other studies that will be conducted.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The researcher will determine the effects of jigsaw strategy in problem

solving to the Students’ Academic Performance in Eastern Visayas State

University Carigara Campus. The scope of this study is confined to all first-

year Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics students at

Eastern Visayas State University Carigara Campus 2nd semester A.Y 2021-

2022, who will serve as the research's respondents.
