Diesel Cycle Problem

An oil engine works on a Diesel cycle with a temperature of 27°C at the beginning of compression. If the
ratio of adiabatic compression is 15 and that of adiabatic expansion is 9 find the thermal efficiency of the
cycle.

Diesel Power plant Problem

An 860-kWh diesel generating unit has a generator efficiency of 91%. If the mass of the fuel is 210
kilograms, then compute for the engine fuel rate.

Solution:

Generator Output = 860 kW-h

Brake Power Output = 860 kW-h/0.91 = 945.05 kW-h

Diesel Power plant Heat Balance Problem

A diesel electric power plant generates 5 MW of electrical power. The plant has an efficiency of 35%.
Calculate:

a. The total energy input in the form of fuel (in MW).

b. The waste heat produced by the plant (in MW).

a. Calculate the total energy input in the form of fuel.

𝑃𝑜𝑢𝑡
𝜂=
𝑃𝑖𝑛
Rearrange the formula to solve for the input power.
𝑃𝑜𝑢𝑡
= 𝑃𝑖𝑛
𝜂
5 𝑀𝑊
= 14.29 𝑀𝑊
0.35
b. Calculate the waste heat produced by the plant.

𝑃𝑤𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒 = 𝑃𝑖𝑛 − 𝑃𝑜𝑢𝑡

𝑃𝑤𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒 = 14.29 𝑀𝑊 − 5 𝑀𝑊 = 9.28 𝑀𝑊
