— Structural Detailing - CON4326

Assignment 5 - Foundation Plan

• Pile cap plan

− the transition between the superstructure and the pile foundation
− setting out and dimensions of the cap
− setting out and dimensions of the columns/wall above the cap
− setting out and dimensions of the pile below the cap
− pile cut off level, cap bottom and top levels, existing ground level, and finished level
− tie beam
− column/wall loading schedule
− starter bars for column/wall
− excavation plan and safety measures
• Piling plan
− setting out and dimensions of the cap
− piles label, setting out, size, raking angle
− cut off level, estimated founding level, existing ground level and finished level
− location of ground investigation boreholes
− pile type, material and method of installation
− pile safe load and working load
− method of checking the founding depth
− pile position tolerance (usually ± 75 mm)
− safely monitoring: settlement, vibration, noise, etc.
— Points to be noted in detailing
• Size of the cap shall be large enough to accommodate the tolerance in pile positioning and
avoid clash of rebars between piles, cap and column (usually 150mm on each side)
• Provide tie beam for pile of single and double pile or pile with eccentric load.
• Pay attention to the risk of ground settlement due to migration of soil into the void that may
be formed beneath the pile cap due to long term ground consolidation.
• Due to large concentrated point load and shear force, the depth of the pile cap is usually
required to be very large such that span/depth < 3, and therefore the convention beam theory
is not applicable for the design and detailing and truss analogy similar to that for deep beam
is usually adopted.
− Provide full anchorage with large radius bend for bottom tension bar beyond the supports
− Provide horizontal shear reinforcement bars
— Assignment 5 – Foundation Plan
• Draw the pile cap plan for the car park per attached on A3 paper using a scale of 1:150. (For
A4 paper, use plot scale 1:225)
• Typical cap size = (1000+last Student ID digit *20) and (3000+last Student ID digit *50)
• Centre the pile cap with reference to the column. Tie beams are aligned to the centre of the
column.
• Pile cap for staircase core = 4900 and (1250 + 9000 + last Student ID digit *50 + 1250).
• Show all setting out dimensions of the pile cap
• Draw a typical section for the column pile cap and section A-A
