OSCILLATIONS AND WAVES

ASSIGNMENT 1 MARCH 12, 2023

1. A wave on a string is described by the formula y = 0.030 Sin(0.55x − 62.8t + π/3). What is the
wavelength, frequency, period, phase constant, and speed of the wave. Sketch the reference
circle, the snapshot graph (t = 0), and the history graph (x = 0).

2. Plot the snapshot graph (t=0) and history graph (x=0) for the following reference circle
diagrams. What is the phase constant φ0 in each case?

3. Consider the snapshot graph below for a wave moving to the right at t = 0. What is the phase
constant φ0? Sketch the reference circle at the indicated points A, B, C, and D. Where exactly
does point A and point B occur?

4. Given 𝑥 = 𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝜔𝑡 + 𝜑). Find the position and the velocity of the wave at time 𝑡 = 0 using
which calculate the amplitude 𝐴 and phase 𝜑 of the wave.

5. How much does the phase of a wave with period (T) of 20 seconds change in 5 seconds?
