The Correlation between Smartphone Use and Academic Performance among Grade 12

Students at Genesis Advanced Intech Academy Inc.

CHAPTER 5
Summary, Conclusions, And Recommendations
Summary
The main purpose of conducting this study was to determine whether if using smartphone has
effectively become significant to the Grade 12 learners of GAIAI academic performance,
which was represented by GPA. This research took place during February to March 2024.
Engaging a correlational quantitative method, the study aligned and enclosed on exploring
the relationship between smartphone use and academic performance of the respondents.
Survey questionnaire is the research instrument employed followed by the data analysis
implementing the percentage distribution, frequency analysis, and the most relevant one
throughout the whole data, the Pearson correlation coefficient.
Summary of the Findings
Gender distribution: Female respondents make up 59.09% while our male respondent counts
up to 40.91%. Therefore, majority of our respondent are Female.
Enrollment distribution among Strands: HUMMS has the highest frequency leading with
37.5% out of a 100% total. While STEM coming in second with 28.41%, almost tying with
ICT consisting of 27.27%, with ABM having the least amount coming in with 6.82%.
GPA distribution: Most of the students has 86-90 GPA, leading it to have the highest
frequency with the percentage of 39.77%. While 27 respondents answered having GPA
ranging from 91-97 with 30.69% of frequency. 24 respondents have 80-85 average with the
percentage of 27.27%. 2 learners have an average of 75-79 making up the 2.27% of a 100%
total.
Smartphone usage distribution: Majority of the respondents are most likely to spend more
than 8 hours a day using their smartphone, with it representing a percentage of 35.33%. And
2 students answered 0-2 hours, with 2.27% of frequency, making it the least frequency out of
all the duration specified.
Correlation distribution: Results of the correlation indicates that there is a non-significant
large negative relationship between X and Y. Parallel that Grade 12 learners’ smartphone
usage and GPA have a non-significant large negative correlational value.

Conclusion
Our study generally focus on the link between smartphone use and the students’ academic
performance. The respondents of this study have spent a substantial amount of time in using
smartphones for their learning tasks; however the effort reflected negatively on their
academic performance. Based on the results reported in Tables 6 and 7, one might ask, at the
end of the day what has smartphone use for school-related activities contributed to the
respondents’ learning? They could have been looking up words twenty times per day and
acquiring none of them or spending hours reviewing class notes on their smartphones and
retaining very little information for their effort. This result could be the consequences of
multitasking while doing a learning task. The psychological literature has found that
multitasking is detrimental to learning and task execution, yet not all these apply to each
students. Therefore, the current study results showed that smartphone use has a non-
significant relationship into a student’s academic performance.

Recommendation
There is a vital need to better understand the mechanisms underlying this behavior. Future
studies should focus on ways to facilitate learners’ intentional behavior toward using
smartphones so that they will develop the capacity to use smartphones to increase learning
effectiveness or one’s academic performance.
Schools can give signs and policies for institution and offerings of personal webinars so they
know how to balance smartphone and give them a thrilling exhibition so it adds that exciting
part in learning about how they will have a systematic review of the correlation between
smartphone use and academic performance and will be useful due time as it aims for long
term success
Students should have a personal conversation one on one at their teachers about balancing
phones and for example talking about them on not relying too much on Ai bots like
ChatGPT, Quillbot, and other more Ai because it will give them habits that is not good on
your critical thinking skills and encourage students to use smartphone on just studies not to
fight boredom and boring situations because they can just read a book, make a to-do list or
make a conversation with your classmates.
Teachers play a big part to this especially teaching the students on a step by step process
especially on balancing smartphone and academic performance, this step by step process are
namely not using phones during class activities, projects, and so on and so forth that will be
beneficial on the long run.
By applying these recommendations, it will create an environment that is technologically
healthy to learn how to use the smartphones while considering one’s academic performance
that will be beneficial upon the future generations and learn from this research paper.
