What Is It
SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENT
A system of measurement is a set of units that can be used to specify anything that
can be measured.
These are the common units of measurement used in making layout and installation
of electrical materials:
A. Linear measures
1. English system provides a creative way on how people can measure by
themselves. For example, people measure shorter distances on the ground
with their feet. They measure long distances by their palms which is equal to
a yard.
• Inch
• Yard
• Miles
3
2. Metric system is a decimalized system of measurement. It exists in several
variations with different choices of base units. Metric units are widely used
around the world for personal, commercial, and scientific purposes.
• Millimeter
• Centimeter
• Decimeter
• Meter

Unit cancellation is
one of the easiest
ways to keep control
of your units in any
science problem.
This example
converts grams to
kilograms. It does
not matter what the
units are, the
process is the same.

Example #1 Question: How Many Meters Are in 100 Yards?
The graphic shows the steps and information necessary to easily convert yards to
meters. Most people memorize a few conversions to get by. Almost nobody would
know right off that 1 yard = 0.9144 meters. They know a yard is a little longer than
a meter, but not much. The common length conversion people remember is 1 inch
= 2.54 centimeters.
• The only unit that should be left is the one you want. If you still have extra
units, you are probably missing a conversion in the equation.
This example problem demonstrates how to convert feet to meters. Feet is the
English (American) unit of length or distance, while meters are the metric unit of
length.
The average commercial jet flies around an altitude of 32,500 feet. How high is this
in meters?
Solution:
1 foot = 0.3048 meters
6
Set up the conversion so that the desired unit will be canceled out. In this case,
we want m to be the remaining unit.
Many conversion factors are difficult to remember. Feet to meters would fall into
this category. An alternate method to perform this conversion is to use multiple
easily remembered steps.
1 foot = 12 inches
1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
100 centimeters = 1 meter
Using these steps, we can express a distance in meters from feet as:
distance in m = (distance in ft) x (12 in/1 ft) x (2.54 cm/1 in) x (1 m/100 cm)
distance in m = (distance in ft) x 0.3048 m/ft
Note: This gives the same conversion factor as above. The only thing to watch out
for is for the intermediate units to cancel out.
Converting Units:
After you understand how to cancel out units in fractions and how to set up fractions
equal to 1, you have a foolproof system for converting units of measurement.
Suppose you want to convert 7 meters into feet. Using the equation 1 meter = 3.26
feet, you can make a fraction out of the two values as follows:
Both fractions equal 1 because the numerator and the denominator are equal. So,
you can multiply the quantity you are trying to convert (7 meters) by one of these
fractions without changing it. Remember that you want the meters unit to cancel
out. You already have the word meters in the numerator (to make this clear, place 1
in the denominator), so use the fraction that puts 1 meter in the denominator:
7
Now cancel out the unit that appears in both the numerator and denominator:
At this point, the only value in the denominator is 1, so you can ignore it. And the
only unit left is feet, so place it at the end of the expression:
It may seem strange that the answer appears with the units already attached, but
that is the beauty of this method: When you set up the right expression, the answer
just appears.
