Lesson 1: Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

PARALLEL LINES – two lines that never intersect.

The symbol ∥ is used to indicate parallel lines.

interior
INTERIOR The space INSIDE the 2 lines.

exterior
EXTERIOR The space OUTSIDE the 2 lines.
exterior

Here is an example of a parallel lines cut by a transversal.

If we put the illustration above into symbol, it can be like this,

´ CD
AB∥ ´ , EF
´ is the transversal.

Interior Angles are on the interior of the two lines cut by the transversal.
In the given example above the interior angles are:
2, 3, 6, and 7

Exterior Angles are on the exterior of the two lines cut by the transversal.
The exterior angles in the above example are:
1, 8, 4, and 5.

Lesson 2: Angles Formed by Parallel Lines

Cut by a Transversal
6
When two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, the following angle pair
relationships are created:

A. CORRESPONDING ANGLES

Pattern:

Corresponding angles does not clearly describe the location of these

angles. The angles are on the same side of the transversal, one interior and one
exterior, but not adjacent.

The four pairs of corresponding angles are 1 & 5, 3 & 7, 2 & 6, and
4 & 8.

B. ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES

Pattern:

Alternate interior angles, clearly describe the location of these angles,

means alternating sides of the transversal but interior of the parallel lines.

The two pairs of alternate interior angles are 3 & 6 and 4 & 5.

7
C. ALTERNATE EXTERIOR ANGLES
Pattern:

Alternate exterior angles means alternating sides of the transversal but

exterior of the parallel lines.

The two pairs of alternate exterior angles are 1 & 8 and 2 & 7.

D. SAME SIDE INTERIOR ANGLES

Pattern:

The two pairs of the same side interior angles are 3 & 5 and 4 & 6.
These angles are located exactly as their name describes. They are interior and on
the same side of the transversal.

E. SAME SIDE EXTERIOR ANGLES

Pattern:

The two pairs of the same side exterior angles are 1 & 7 and 2 & 8.
These angles are located exactly as their name describes. They are exterior and on
the same side of the transversal.
8
F. LINEAR PAIR ANGLES
Pattern:

The four pairs of linear pairs are 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6, and 7 & 8.
A linear pair are two adjacent angles forming a straight line.

G. VERTICAL ANGLES
Pattern:

When straight lines intersect, vertical angles appear. The four pairs of vertical
angles are 1 & 4, 2 & 3, 5 & 8, and 6 & 7.

What’s More
Exercise 1
Instruction: Write the angle relationship for each pair of angles.

1. I & T are _____________ angles.

2. M & C are _____________ angles.
3. A & I are _____________ angles.
4. E & T are _____________ angles.
5. A & C are _____________ angles.

9
Lesson 3: Measure of Angles formed by
Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

When parallel lines get crossed by another line, which is the transversal, you
can see that many angles are the same, as in this example.

CORRESPONDING ANGLES

In the example, S & T are corresponding angles and both have the
same measure, which is 118 ° . Therefore, we can say that
mS is read as
mS ¿ mT measure of
118 °=118 ° angle S.

If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, the corresponding angles

are congruent.

ALTERNATE INTERIOR/EXTERIOR ANGLES

In the example, pairs of alternate interior angles (E & H and T & I) and
alternate exterior angles (S & A and M & C) have the same measure. In
symbol,
mE ¿ mH mS ¿ mA
62 °=62 ° 118 °=118 °

If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, the alternate

interior/exterior angles are congruent.

10
SAME SIDE INTERIOR/EXTERIOR ANGLES

Notice that in the same side interior angles, E and T, if we add their
measurement it will sum up to 180 °. In symbol,
mE +¿ mH ¿ ?
62 °+ 118 °=180 °

If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, the interior/exterior angles

on the same side of the transversal are supplementary.

LINEAR PAIR ANGLES

Since a straight line angle contains 180 ° , the two angles forming a linear pair
also contain 180 ° when their measures are added (making them supplementary).
mS +¿ mC ¿ ?
118 ° +62 °=180 °

Angles forming a linear pair are always supplementary.

VERTICAL ANGLES

Vertical angles are always equal in measure, whether the lines are parallel
or not.
mS ¿ mC
118=118 °

Vertical angles are congruent.

11
What’s More
Exercise 2
Instructions: In the given figure, line D is parallel to line O and line G is the
transversal. Determine whether the following angle pairs are congruent or
supplementary.

3 4
1 2 7 8
5 6 G

D O
