Types of Institutions in Canada

Universities
A university offers academic and professional
degree programs. These universities
generally have one intake in the year
September and have fixed deadlines. Some
universities have more than one intake and
the alternate would be January intake. A
university program is usually of 4 years in
duration at the undergraduate level and 2
years at Master’s level i.e Graduate Studies.
Every university functions according to its
own norms.

University College

A university college offers


university degrees as well as
college diplomas and certificates
programs. They may also offer
combined degree diploma
programs and university transfer
programs. Their strong student
support services, small classes and
strong campus environment
distinguish university colleges.

Community College
Community colleges are not affiliated to universities in Canada unlike in India
and offer diplomas, certificates and applied degrees. Some community colleges
offer university transfer programs that allow students to take courses that are
parallel to those offered for the first two years of a four year university

Community colleges have up to 3 intakes in a year September, January and May.


The programs are 1,2,3 and 4 years in duration while having flexible deadlines.

Scholarship

There are limited scholarships available in Canada but they rarely cover the full
cost of a study program and they are not shown easy to find. Scholarships are
available to international students with exceptional results at some Canadian
Institutions. The amount varies from one institution to another and usually
cover’s only part of a student’s education and living expenses. Obtaining a
scholarship is very competitive and applications must be made directly to each
university along with the application for admission. Community and career
colleges do not usually award scholarships.

Work While
Study

International students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week on campus


for the initial 6 months and thereafter can work off campus. They can earn
approx C$ 7 – C$ 10 per hour. Student can work for full time during vacation.

Types of
Accommodation
Residence / Dormitory: Many institutions have accommodation located on or
near their campuses. Many residences have a shared kitchen and other facilities.

Off Campus Rental Housing: Many students share accommodation to keep costs
down and usually find places that meet their needs and preferences. Many
institutes offer off campus as well.

Home Stay: Many Canadian families welcome international students. Home stay
also offer a more stable and secure environment. Typically, a home stay consists
of a Canadian Family hosting a student in their home while the student attends
classes in Canada. Meals are provided in home stay but are not compulsory.

Living Expenses Per annum : C$ 10,000

Living Expenses per month : Appr C$ 500 – 750

Study Permit

All international students are required to obtain a student Authorization and visa
before going to Canada for studies. Students must also meet the requirements of
the Canadian Immigration Act and Regulation. Allow at least 4 – 6 weeks for your
visa to be processed. Application should be submitted well in advance of the
planned date departure to ensure that processing of application can be
completed on time.

An interview with a Canadian visa officer may be required for a exceptional cases.
F this is the case then you will be advised in writing about the interview.

Work Permit

Canada is encouraging International students to stay back after their studies. The
new work permit program states that international students who have studies for
2 years can obtain an open work permit with no restriction on the type of
employment and no requirement for a job offer up to 2 – 3 years. Students who
study a one year program are eligible for a one year work permit.
