BICOL REGION
Geographically, Bicol Region (Region V) is in the southernmost tip of
Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago, which lies at 123 to
126 degrees longitude and 12 to 14 degrees latitude or generally at the mid-
section of the country. It has a total land area of 17,362 square kilometers
representing 5.67% share of the Philippines in terms of land area.
The region is the gateway of Luzon to the Visayas and Mindanao and
is within the international seas, hence, the gateway to the Pacific. Located in
the heart of the industrialized countries, the place would serve as a jumping
board for market and business in the Pacific Rim, Europe, and the United
States.The region comprises six provinces: Albay, Camarines Norte,
Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon, each offering its
unique geographical features and attractions.
The Bicol Region is a prominent and vibrant region in the Philippines
renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and
delectable cuisine. This picturesque region is home to the iconic Mayon
Volcano, renowned for its perfect conical shape and the captivating Caramoan
Islands, a popular filming location for the reality TV series "Survivor." With a
diverse and vibrant culture, highlighted by the colorful Penafrancia Festival,
Bicol promises a captivating blend of traditions and modernity.

HISTORY OF BICOL
 PRE-COLONIAL ERA
The Bicol region was inhabited by various indigenous groups, including
the Ibalon, the Kabikolan, and the Buhi, who developed rich cultural
traditions and practiced diverse agricultural and maritime activities.
 SPANIISH COLONIAL PERIOD
The Spanish colonization of the Philippines in the 16th century brought
significant changes to the Bicol region, including the introduction of
Christianity, the establishment of towns and cities, and the integration of
the region into the colonial economy.
 RESISTAMVE AND REVOLUTION
The people of Bicol played a prominent role in the Philippine
Revolution against Spanish rule, with notable figures like Andres Bonifacio
and Apolinario Mabini hailing from the region. The region's history is
marked by resistance and a strong sense of regional identity.

CULTURAL ASPECT
Bicol Language - the most unifying cultural trait of the inhabitants
the fifth largest in the country and the mother tongue of the population of
Southeastern Luzon.

FAMOUS FESTIVALS OF BICOL


 SILI (CHILI PEPPER) FESTIVAL
The Sili Festival in Bicol celebrates the region's abundant production of
spicy chili peppers. The festival features chili-eating contests, cooking
demonstrations, and a parade with performers dressed in elaborate chili-
themed costumes.
 BICOLANO LAING
A savory dish made with dried taro leaves cooked in coconut milk and
chili peppers.
 BICOL EXPRESS
A spicy stew of pork, chili peppers, and coconut milk that packs a
punch.
 PILI NUTS
A unique local delicacy, these buttery nuts are a beloved snack and
ingredient in Bicol.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
The southeastern volcanic region with Mayon volcano as the center is
known as the BICOL PENINSULA. The line of volcanoes that make up the
irregular northeast and east ranges includes from north to south Mt. Isarog,
Mt. Iriga, Mt. Mayon, and Mt. Bulusan. The Peninsula has a very irregular
form with deep and extensive coastal embayments and a long coastline.
1. Mount Isarog
It is a potentially active stratovolcano located in the province of
Camarines Sur, Philippines, on the island of Luzon. The mountain has active
fumaroles and hot springs It has an elevation of 2,000 metres above mean
sea level.
2. Mayon Volcano
It is also known as Mount Mayon, is an active volcano in the province
of Albay, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Renowned as the “perfect
cone” because of its symmetric conical shape and is regarded as sacred in
Philippine mythology.
3. Mount Iriga
It is also known as Mount Asog, is one of the active volcanoes in the
Philippines, in the province of Camarines Sur, in the Philippines. Mount Iriga is
a stratovolcano about a kilometre from Lake Buhi.
4. Mount Bulusan
It is also known as Bulusan Volcano, is a stratovolcano on the island of
Luzon in the Philippines. Located in the province of Sorsogon in the Bicol
Region, it is 70 kilometres southeast of Mayon Volcano and approximately
390 kilometres southeast of Manila.
 Bicol Region is a diverse and picturesque area. It is characterized by
rugged mountains, active volcanoes, and sprawling plains. The climate
is tropical, with distinct wet and dry seasons, providing an ideal
environment for agriculture and tourism.
 The region has a heavy rainfall throughout the year and a fertile
volcanic soil favorable to the growth of abaca and coconuts. However,
it lies along the path of destructive typhoons.

ECONOMIC RESOURCES OF BICOL


1. FARMING - The economy of the Bicol region is basically subsistence
farming. The following are their products:
a. Abaka
• The Abaca is planted in the volcanic soil near and on the slopes of the
volcanoes of the region.
• The fibers of the self-sustaining Abaca are used in the production of
handicraft products such as: handbags, hats, shoes, slippers, lamps,
carpets, accessories, clothing, furniture, and wallcoverings.
b. Coconut
• Bicol Region is among the top producers of coconuts in the Philippines
and are generally grown in coastal areas.
c. Rice

f. Sweet potatoes
g. Vegetables
2. MINING
Camarines Norte constitutes one of the most important mineral districts
of the country, ex. GOLD & SILVER.
3. FISHERY
Ragay Gulf, San miguel Bay & Lagonoy Gulf of the Bicol region are
among the important fishing grounds in the Philippines.

PROVINCES OF BICOL
Bicol Region is composed of four contiguous provinces: Albay,
Camarines Sur, CamarineNorte and Sorsogon and two island provinces:
Catanduanes and Masbate.
1. CAMARINES NORTE
 is a province in the Philippines situated in the Bicol Region occupying
the southeastern peninsula of Luzon and the outlying island provinces
of Masbate and Catanduanes. It has 12 towns, and the capital is
Municipality of Daet.
 Camarines Norte derives its name from the Spanish word “camarin”,
meaning rice granary or warehouse.
 Camarines Norte is famous for its Formosa- the sweetest pineapple.
 It is known for mining, jewelry craft, pineapple, and coconut industry.
 The province has a land area of 2,277.93 square kilometers or 879.51
square miles.
 The total population of Camarines Norte is 95,572 people.
 Mount Labo, is a potentially active stratovolcano in the province of
Camarines Norte.

Tourists Attractions
a. Bagabas Beach - One of the top surfing destinations in the Philippines.
In February 2009, Bagasbas hosted the First
InternatiKiteboardingCompetition in the region.
b. First Jose Rizal Momentum - The construction of the memorial marker
started on December 30, 1898, and it was declared as a historical
landmark in 1961. It was made of mortars and boulders from the
demolished Old Spanish Jail in Daet where many patriots died, making
it historically and culturally significant.
c. Our Lady of Candelaria - One of the first churches built in Camarines
Norte in 1611. The old stone church was built by Our Lady of
Candelaria the early Franciscan missionaries.
Festivals
a. Bantayog Festivals
- is a historical festival and founding anniversary celebration held in
the province of Camarines Norte, Philippines every April. It is a
festival that gives tribute to the heroism of Jose Rizal and local
patriots who took part in the Daet revolt in 1898.

b. Pinyahan Festival
- The Pinyahan or also known Pineapple Festival is held every year
during the month of auguts auntil september in Daet Camarines
Norte. This festival features colorful and exciting… More street
presentation. The purpose for establishing the Pineapple Festival
was to honor the many pineapple farmers for their outstanding
contributions to the community and art displays, trade fair, cultural
shows, and sports events.
c. Pabirik Festival (Gold Pinning)
- The Pabirik Festival is celebrated every week of January up to the
day of town fiesta on the second day of February. Pabirik means
“pan” which is a medium used by the natives of Paracale in gold
panning.

2. CAMARINES SUR
 Camarines Sur or also called CamSur is the largest among the six
provinces in the Bicol region in Luzon both in terms of population and
land area. It is a hilly and mountainous with a flat central area known
as the Bikol plain.
 It comprises into 2 cities Naga City, the lone chartered city, while Iriga
City, is a component city and 35 municipalities, the capital is Pili.
 The province's name has been derived from "camaronchones" or
"camarines", a Spanish word for “kamalig” referring to small nipa or
bamboo-made huts by the natives.
 Naga City, the former capital of Camarines Sur, was found in 1573 as
Nueva Caceres namesake of the Province in Spain and among the
original five royal cities of the colony.
 Camarines Sur is home to the smallest fish in the world The dwarf goby
(pandaka pygmaea) measures 1.2 centimeters or less than half an inch
and famous for its Mt. Isarog.
 The total land area is 5,266.8 square kilometres 2,034 sq mi, it is the
largest province in the Bicol Region.
 The province of Camarines Sur has a population of 2.07 million.
Tourists Attractions
a. Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Mother of Peace Grotto - A flight of
524 steps (530 if landing is included) to the grotto leads to the 26-foot
image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The construction of Our Lady of the
Most Holy Rosary, Mother of Peace Grotto began in 1989 under the
leadership of St. Dominic of Guzman parish priest Rev. Fr. Felix F.
Barella.
b. CamSur Watersports Complex - Camsur WatersportsComplex (CWC)
is a worldclass 6-hectare watersportspark located in Pili, Camarines
Sur. The park offers facilities for various water sports, especially for
wakeboarding,wakeskating, kneeboarding, and waterskiing, day and
night.

a. Peñafrancia Festival
- The Peñafrancia Festival is the largest Marian festival in the
Philippines, celebrated annually in Naga City, Bicol by the month of
september. It features vibrant processions, lively dance
performances, and the grand "Traslacion" where the image of the
Virgin Mary is paraded through the streets.
b. Kaogma Festival
- The Kaogma Festival marks the foundation day of Camarines Sur in
the Philippines and celebrated in the month of May. It is a week-
long pageant of colorful activities. The Kaogma Festival title has
been modified to "Kaogma Mardi Gras: The World's Hottest
Festival". Kaogma translates to "a good time" in the local dialect.

3. ALBAY
 The province of Albay is generally mountainous with scattered fertile
plains and valleys. The Land of the most perfect cone “Mayon Volcano”
the symbol most associated with the province.it has two other major
peaks: Mount Masaraga and Mount Malinao.
 Long before the Spaniards arrived, Albay had a thriving civilization.
Formerly called Ibat, and then Libog, Albay was once ruled by Gat Ibal,
an old chief who also founded the old barangay of Sawangan, now the
district of Albayand part of the city of Legazpi.
 It was named after Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the Spanish conquistador
who came to the Philippines in 1565 and started the massive
colonization.
 Albay has 15 municipalities and 3 component cities Legazpi, Ligao and
Tabaco: Capital Legaspi.
 Albay has a total land area of 2,554.06 square kilometers 986.13
square miles.
 The population of Albay has 1,374,768 people.
Tourists Attractions
a. Mayon Volcano - No other volcano in the world has a cone as perfectly
shaped as Mayon. There have been 49 eruptions since the first
documented activity in 1616, with the worst explosion occurring on
February 1, 1814, and killing some 1,200 people in Cagsawa and
Budiao. Like other volcanoes located around the Pacific Ocean, Mayon
is a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
b. The Cagraray EcoPark - A nature camp on Cagraray Island, which is
connected to mainland Albay by the Sula Bridge. It offers adventure
activities such as wall climbing and zipline rides. A signature spot within
the park is the amphitheater, which is built just near the entrance to the
park. Other noteworthy structures are the chapel, hanging bridge, and
solar-powered lampposts.
c. Danao Lake - Danao Lake is located 500 meters above sea level and
about 20 kilometers away from the town center. It is surrounded by lush
and verdant vegetation where animals graze freely, usually when
riceplanting season is over.

a. Magayon Festivals
- Held every month of May, Magayon Festival is derived from the
popular legend of Mayon Volcano to honor the province's bounty
and beauty. One of the highlights of this event is the stage
reenactment of the tragic love story of Daragang Magayon and
Panganoron whose fatal deaths gave birth to the volcano.
b. Ibalong Festival
- The Ibalong Festival is a non-religious festival in Legazpi City,
Albay, Philippines based on the Ibalong Epic, and is held on August.
The festival celebrates the epic story Ibalong who was
accompanied by three legendary heroes, namely Baltog,
Handyong, and Bantong.

4. SORSOGON
 It is the southernmost province in Luzon filled with nature-based
adventures and the home of one of fomous Mountain the Mt. Bulusan.
 The name of the city is derived from the word "sosogon" meaning
"trace the river by going upstream".
 it is subdivided into 14 municipalities and 1 city. Its capital is Sorsogon
City (formerly the towns of and Bacon) and borders the province of
Albay to the north.

a. Bulusan Volcano - One of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines
is Bulusan Volcano.
b. Bulusan Lake - Bulusan Lake Nestled at the heart of Bulusan Volcano
National Park is a popular tourist attraction in Sorsogon called Bulusan
Lake.
c. Barcelona Church - The Coral Church of Barcelona the pastoral town
of Barcelona which is only a few kilometers away from Gubat prides
itself for its 18th century church.

a. Buntanding Festival
- Sorsogon, particularly Donsol and being celebrated in the month of
May, it has become popular among the local and international
tourists because of its famous whale shark or what is locally known

b. Padaraw Festival
- The Padaraw Festival in Bulan, Sorsogon by the month of May this
festival is a celebration of unity. It is the people’s thanksgiving for

lands of Bulan. It is during this festival that the locals come together
in unity amidst challenges and struggles.

5. MASBATE
 Masbate is an island province in the Philippines that is mostly rural and
lies at the center of the Philippines archipelag, it is also known as
Rodeo Capital of Southeast Asia.
 The account that "Masbate" was coined after the words "masa" and
"bate" remains anecdotal.
 The province is known for its cattle industry, which produces high-
quality beef and dairy products.
 Masbate comprises 20 municipalities and one city: the capital is
Masbate.
 It is made up of three big islands: the main island of Masbate, Ticao,
and Burias.
 Administratively, it is part of Bicol, but the culture and language of the
people who live there are Visayan, not Bicolano.
 The city has a land area of 188.00 square kilometers or 72.59 square
miles which constitutes 4.54% of Masbate's total area.
 The total population of Masbate is 892,393.
Tourists Attractions
a. Catandayan Falls - One of the most beautiful falls in the province. It
cascades from 60 feet to its base where multi-colored fishes cavort. It
is one hour by motorboat from the capital.
b. Tinalisay Island- Located in Burias Island, this enchanting place is ideal
for sunbathing and swimming. spacer Aroroy Beach Fast becoming an
attraction among the excursionists. Its unspoiled natural beauty is the
dominating feature.
c. Ki-Alabay Beach (Claveria, Masbate) - This beach extends east
southeast from the town proper with an approximate length of one and
a half kilometers of sandy and well-polished pebbles ending on Ki-
albay River,a place believed to have been inhabited first by people
from Albay.

a. Rodeo Masbateño
- Rodeo Masbateño in Masbate Provinces is an annual event in
Masbate that showcases the province's cattle and livestock
industry, it is celebrated in the month of April.
b. Pagdulang Festival
- The Pagdulang is the official folk dance of Aroroy that is being
celebrated during the onth of April, it is inspired by one of the most
common livelihoods in the town, which is the panning of gold.

6. CATANDUANES
 Catanduanes is an island province in the Philippines situated east off
the Mainland Bicol of Luzon Archipelago. Catanduanes has a great
deal to offer to guests with its varied blend of Spanish Colonial
churches, waterfalls, waves perfect for surfing, and beaches that are
still untouched even for most of the locals that whhy they called it “The
Happy Island”.
 One legend state that Catanduanes came from the word “tandu”, a
native click beettle that was abundant throughout the island.
“Katanduan” then was the reference made of this island. When the
Spaniards came, it was corrupted from katanduan to Catanduanes.
 Because of its location, the province is usually the first place in the
Philippines to get battered by typhoons, and so the province is
nicknamed the “Land of the Howling Winds.”
 Catanduanes comprises of 11 municipalities and its capital is the Virac
City.
 It has a total population of 76,520 people.
 The highest and the most prominent mountain in Catanduanes is the
Conical Peak.
 Catanduanes' earliest recorded name was Isla de Cobos.
Tourists Attractions
a. Maribina falls - It is one of the most popular and most accessible
waterfalls in the province. The falls is about 5 meters high with
marvelous gushing rapids of crystal-clear waters.
b. Luyang Cave - is loacated at San Andress, it was the cave that the
natives used as a refuge from the attacking Moro Pirates during the
17th century. The pirates uprooted several sili (red peppers) and some
dried leaves at the entrance of the cave to suffocate the natives inside.

a. Abaca Festival
- The festival is cognizance of the importance of abaca fiber or
Manila hemp industry in the local economy and the need to
showcase its versatility as a major source of livelihood and craft
material which has brought Catanduanes fame and fortune.
b. Catandungan Festival
- The Catandungan Festival was praised each October to celebrate
the establishment commemoration of Catanduanes as an area free
from Albay.
