Ralph, an Unusual Guy
Years ago, when our youngest son was in college, he was required to raise a baby lab rat whom he
named Ralph. He had to carry Ralph in his pocket, hand-feed him and play with him. Ralph was part of a
study in my son's psychology class. When the class was over, he had the option of trying to re-home Ralph or
donate him to a raptor rehabilitation centre! Because I was an educator, I was allowed to adopt Ralph.
Ralph then turned out to be the best classroom pet ever! My first-grade class adored him! He was
very gentle, curious and loving. I carefully show the kids how to hold him and care for him. The parents also
agreed to this new pet. We were able to teach him tricks and would allow him to roll in his wheel, daily, for
exercise and he would be handled daily. My students were keen on earning tickets for extra time with him.
They took turns feeding him and cleaning his cage with supervision. During any indoor recess, he would be
allowed to roll in his wheel in the school hallways but could always find his way back to his classroom.
Everyone in school loved Ralph. And he would spend holidays and weekends at my house with us,
and my son would get to see him. When Ralph died unexpectedly, I wrapped him in several bags to freeze
so my son, Adam could bury him. I know that sounds crazy, but Ralph was anunusual kind of guy!

Last Day of School

The most emotional day of school I've ever experienced was the last day of year 6. I came to school
thinking it would just be another normal last day of school. It turned out to be the complete opposite.
The thought of not seeing friends and teachers again was very saddening. It caused endless tears to
come out of everybody's eyes, including the teachers! We were all emotional wrecks. This went on from
about an hour after recess till the start of lunch and even during lunch, there were still innumerable people
crying.

After lunch there was assembly. All the year 6's were meant to do a flash mob for the last part of the
assembly, but I didn't know how we were possibly going to do it in the state we were all in. All of a sudden,
the music started and everybody's face just lit up and we sprang into action. It was perfect. The entire
assembly loved it.
9|Page ENGLISH “PTS” 2nd SEMESTER (Grade: 9)

The bell rang and that's when all the crying started again except this time it was twice as bad. There
were probably only a handful of kids, including myself. Even though I wasn't crying I still felt very sad
because two of my best friends were moving out of Darwin and my other three best friends weren't even
going to the same middle school as me.

All the crying eventually stopped at around 3 o'clock, and everybody went home.
I always hated primary school, but now I wish I was back there with all my friends playing rugby
with not a worry in the world.

10 | P a g e ENGLISH “PTS” 2nd SEMESTER (Grade: 9)

heard of the illness that plagued King Yunan. It was leprosy driving the King towards an early death, and
although many doctors tried, none of them could cure him.
So, Duban ventured to the King’s palace and announced that he could cure him. The Grand Vizier
was immediately suspicious about Duban and his supposed talents and would not allow him to personally
tend to the King. “Then I shall cure him without laying a finger on him,” Duban said.
The next day, Duban presented the King with a mallet with which to play croquet. The king began
to play and as he played, he began to sweat. And as he began to sweat, medicine from the handle of the
mallet was absorbed into the King’s skin. After a bath and a good night’s rest, the King awoke cured of an
affliction. The King showered Duban with praise and lots of wealth.
Jealous of the King’s favour, the Grand Vizier professed, “The Sage has cured you with one
medicine, but with another, he will take your life. If a person can cure you without giving medicine directly,
how long it will take for him to kill you?” The King knew that Grand Vizier was jealous and said, “I know
you are jealous of him! But I don’t believe you!” the King said. Speaking continuously about Duban, the
King was confused. Being a weak personality, he agreed with what the Grand Vizier said. Angered by this
impending betrayal, the King ordered Duban to be executed. Duban was astonished when he heard that he
had to die.
At this cruel order, Duban threw himself on his knees. “Spare my life, my lord,” he begged. But all
his efforts were in vain. As a parting gift, Duban presented the King with a book which was said to contain
all the knowledge of the world. He took the book from Duban’s hands and ordered the executioner to do
his duty. Duban was headed and as the King opened the book, he found that the pages were blank. The
king flipped over every leaf, licking his finger to help turn each page. The pages of the book had been

Sea Pigs
Sea pigs are populous deep-sea dwellers, even though you'll likely never see one. As their name
suggests, they look like gummy pink pigs, but with no eyes, many more legs, and near-transparent

class of animals called echinoderms, which alsoincludes sea urchins and starfish.
Sea pigs are found in all the world's oceans. In some areas, they comprise more than 95% of the total

The Needle Tree

There were once two brothers who lived at the edge of a forest. The older brother was very
mean to his younger brother. He ate up all the food and took all his brother’s good clothes.

One day, the elder brother went into the forest to find some firewood to sell in the market.
As he went around, chopping the branches of the tree after tree, he came upon a magical tree. The
tree said to him, “Oh kind sir, please do not cut my branches. If you spare me, I will give you
golden apples.” The elder brother agreed, but he was disappointed with the number of apples the tree
gave him. Greed overcame him, and he threatened to cut the entire trunk if the tree didn’t give
him more apples. Instead, the magical tree showered upon the elder brother, hundreds of tiny needles.
The elder brother lay on the ground crying in pain as the sun began to lower down the horizon.

The younger brother grew worried and went in search of his brother. He then found him lying
in pain near the tree, with hundreds of needles on his body. He rushed to him and removed each
needle with painstaking love. After he finished, the elder brother apologized to his brother for
