ABSTRACT

This research is conducted in Grade Four Class of San Roque

Central Elementary School, San Roque District for school year

2014-2015.

To gather the data, the researchers used observation

method and interview method.

Using the observation method, the researchers found out

that almost 75 percent or 30 out of 50 pupils are not

participating during class discussions. Some of them are doing

other activities or assignments in their other subjects than

participating in class discussions. Others are just listening

but do not stand or participate when their name is called.

Of the two Mathematics classes handled by the

researcher, almost same situation was encountered.

When interviewed, most of them responded that they are

afraid that they might give wrong answers to questions which

might result to ridicule. Some of them said that they had a

difficulty in Mathematics. Others said that they are shy to stand

in front of their classmates.

The data has been collected and already interpreted by the

researchers. In order for the identified problem to be

eliminated or minimized, the researchers have formulated an

action plan where specific objectives and activities were

iv
enumerated and plotted so that the underlying factors could be

given due solutions.

After the implementation of the action plan, the

researcher found out that giving rewards increase pupils’ class

participation in the discussion.

Letting the pupils participate in class discussion by

giving them rewards also increase their self-confidence. Almost

all pupils are willing to participate to get the reward. They

are motivated to study to get the correct answers. They become

interested and look forward for the next lesson.

Based on the result of the action plan implementation,

the researcher has come into a conclusion that lack of class

participation can be solved by teacher who exerted an effort to

have different rewards to reinforce pupils’ behavior inside the

classroom. The environment, as an additional factor on the

existence of the problem, can be in congruent with the learning

environment of the children.

The problem of pupils lack of participation can also be

solved by boasting the confidence of the pupils and praising them

every time they get the correct answer.
