Eagle Sightings November 2011

Happy November! Time really is flying by I cannot believe it is already November! I have been visiting the classrooms, and great things are happening. Our students have traveled to far off locations this past month. The sixth graders visited the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center (Mountain School) and learned about Water Quality. Our 4 th graders visited the Salmon Hatchery on Orcas Island, the 5th graders traveled to Trout Lake and our 1st graders visited the Pumpkin Patch. Thank you to all of our parents who helped to chaperone; these enriching experiences could not have happened without you! October was Making Healthy Choices Month. We celebrated Red Ribbon week with an assembly, banners, red ribbons and pencils. Students learned how to make healthy choices through daily announcements and lessons in the classroom. The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to raise awareness about the importance of saying no to drugs and to other unhealthy behaviors. The month of November is Be Thankful month. (Shh! Its a secretif a child comes up to me and tells me what he or she is thankful for, a special surprise will be given). Veterans Day is this week, and FHES will celebrate with our traditional Veterans Day Assembly. Teachers are working hard to prepare for family math nights at each grade level. The 2nd grade math night will be held on November 17th. Child care and interpreters will be provided thanks to our generous PTA. The first Principals Coffee Hour is on November 21st at 4 PM. All of our dialogue will be posted on my Coffee Blog. I hope you can attend any or all of these events! Our staff and students are beginning to anticipate the holiday season! There are many fun activities coming up. Be sure to catch the play Oh No! Grannys Got the Remote. Granny and her magical remote bring the lessons of the holiday season to life! More than 50 Island children will be part of this new musical start to the holiday season! Our Book Fair, sponsored by our fantastic PTA, will start November 30th. The book fair will kick off I Love to Read

Month in December. The I Love to Read committee has picked Pets, Pals and Paws as this years reading theme;
many fun activities are planned! May you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Heres to Being Thankful! ~ Connie

You will receive this newsletter using the email address you have submitted to the school office. The newsletter also can be found on the FHES website which can be accessed from computers at home or at the public library. Newsletters will be sent out monthly and will include helpful communication about whats happening at FHES. If this causes any hardship for you in any way, please contact the main office, and we can problem solve.

AT FHES one our guiding principles is to work hard to create and sustain an atmosphere of trust, high expectations and productivity within a safe, civil and productive environment. Here are some of the programs we use to teach this guiding principle to the children of FHES.

Teaches preschool through middle school students skills to help them succeed socially and academically. We've just released a new edition of the K5 program and our brand-new early learning program!

A bullying prevention program The research-based STEPS TO RESPECT program teaches elementary students to recognize, refuse, and report bullying, to be assertive, and to build friendships. In fact, a recent study found that the program led to a 31 percent decline in bullying and a 70 percent cut in destructive bystander behavior. STEPS TO RESPECT lessons can help kids feel safe and supported by the adults around them so they can build stronger bonds to school and focus on academic achievement. The program supports the staff, too, with school wide policies and training. Now everyone can work together to build a safe environment free from bullying. http://www.cfchildren.org/programs/str/overview/

We are working together toward a common goal: To re-establish art education in our public schools, ensuring that every school-aged child, regardless of economic means and developmental ability, benefits from art instruction as an integral part of their basic public school education.
