First Year Group Wing Design Project
Week 4-Week 6
2010/2011
Introduction
You are tasked to design and develop a scale model of a semi-monocoque wing for a glider. Essentially,
glider wings are required to be strong yet stiff, but also lightweight. Your final wing design will need to be built from
the available materials and will need to be presented in Week 6 for aerodynamic and structural testing. The wing
will be tested in the wind tunnel and to a set of static load conditions, full details of the test specifications are
outlined. t is a group project and you will work in your tutor groups. %is group project activity wiII be written up
for 100CDE Assignment 1 (Group Academic Paper).
$50cification
The wing will have length of 500mm I2mm from root to tip.
The wing must be of a semi-monocoque construction.
The wing will have chord length of 100mm.
The wing will have the same chord and shape over its entire length (ie taper ratio = 1).
The wing will have no sweep, dihedral or anhedral.
The wing will fit into the jig for testing.
The wing will be fitted with an anchoring point at the wing tip from which the test load can be hung.
The wing should be of a symmetrical profile (NACA 0030) and the dimensions of which are listed in
the table below and where 'chord %' is the distance along the chord line from the leading edge and
'thickness %' is the thickness of the wing at that point along the chord line and represented as a
percentage of the entire chord length.

Aerodynamic
4 The wing will be secured in the wind tunnel at a given angle or attack. The aerodynamic
forces will then be measured.

$tructuraI
4 The wing will be subjected to torsional and bending stresses and its structural integrity
(against its weight) will be measured.

The wing must be made entirely from the limited supply of balsa wood provided, paper or card.
The paper or card must have been originally supplied as sheets (ie prefabricated tubes, etc are
forbidden)
Glue may only be applied for the purposes of bonding surfaces, and may not be deliberately (in the
opinion of the judges) have been applied for stiffening purposes.
You may use any glue or bonding method you wish. However, only standard wood glue will be
provided.
The wing must be semi-monocoque in construction.
