DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
SYLLABUS
2 Semester, SY 2023-2024

I. Course No. and Title: ED 227- Assessment of Student Learning 2

II. Course Description: In this unit, students will learn and apply various methods of proof and disproof to critically analyze and evaluate arguments, claims, and evidence. Students will
develop a deeper understanding of logical reasoning, critical thinking, and the evaluation of evidence. They will learn how to construct valid arguments,
identify fallacies, and effectively counter arguments. Through engaging activities, discussions, and assessments, students will enhance their analytical
skills and become more discerning consumers of information.

Credit:
Hours/Weeks: Week 1 to Week 10 (20 hours)
Prerequisite: A solid understanding of algebra, calculus, basic set theory, and logic is recommended.

III. General Objectives: At the end of the semester, the students are expected to:
 Define and differentiate between proof and disproof.

 Identify different types of proofs (direct, indirect, contradiction, induction) and disproofs (counterexample, reductio ad absurdum).

 Assess the validity and logic of arguments based on their use of proof and disproof.

 Apply methods of proof and disproof to solve problems and investigate real-world scenarios.

 Distinguish between valid and invalid reasoning, recognizing logical fallacies.
