Description
T he Vice President (VP) of Education performs professional and administrative work involving the development,
maintenance, and strategic planning for a viable and profitable education program including resources for children families,
schools, volunteers, and adults. Supervises and facilitates department staffing including staff development, employee
relations, and customer services related to Zoo visitors. Is also responsible for developing and maintaining contacts and
networking with education professionals in San Antonio and the state of Texas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Provide supervision, training, technical guidance, and operational assistance for personnel engaged in the Zoo's
education and graphics programs.
Plan and implement the Education Department operating budget.
Guide the development of the long-range education plans.
Responsible for the content of department programs and services and support and/or assist in their development.
Responsible for supporting the evaluation and assessment of education program offerings and resources.
Serve as liaison with internal and external organizations, institutions, and associations.
Work actively with department volunteers assisting and supporting their involvement in appropriate work assignments.
Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.
Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to
various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest - do not wait to be asked.
Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.

Performs other work-related duties as required and assigned.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
T horough knowledge of education resources, strategies, and current trends affecting the use of the Zoo as an
educational resource.
Ability to develop and effectively direct a team of employees towards satisfactory goal accomplishment.
Ability to evaluate and assess the educational needs, resources, and success of educational programs developed by
the Education Department.
Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
Ability to promote, develop and support collaborative projects between other museums, local universities, schools,
and organizations appropriate to accomplishing the goals of the Education Department.
Ability to successfully coordinate multiple projects.
Strong leadership and management skills to utilize employees and volunteers in order to produce the highest quality
education programs.
T horough knowledge of fiscal, management, and administrative principles and practices.
Bachelor's degree in education, conservation, museum studies, or related field.
Seven (7) years experience with increasing responsibility in formal education program development, instruction and
management.
Two (2) years experience as a classroom teacher or education administrator.
Five (5) years supervisory experience.
