“If a builder constructed a house but did not make his work
strong with the result that the house which he built collapsed and
so caused the death of the owner of house, the builder shall be
put to death.”
King Hammurabi (Babylon)

This was the case in 1700 BC.

Satisfaction of Contract Specifications

Completion of Project Within Time

Enhancing Customer/ Owner Satisfaction

Motivation and Empowerment of Employees

Avoiding Disputes and Claims

Performance-based on Purpose
Factors Affecting Construction Project Quality

Project Requirements

Construction Organization

Quality Teams

Participation of Team Members

Importance of Quality in Construction Projects

 Poor quality can lead to a variety of problems

 such as defects,
 Shorter life span
 Wastes of resources (time, money and skills)

Examples of low-Quality work and its consequences

Importance of Quality in Construction Projects

On the other hand

 QM increases the efficiency of processes

 reduces wastage
 improves the use of time and other resources.
 Hence, this leads to a higher quality of work
 reduced risk of rework and delays, and
 helps in cost management.
 improves customer satisfaction
Application of Quality in Construction Projects
Quality is a key factor
 In ensuring project success
 Meeting standards
 reducing risks &
 Increasing efficiency.

It is necessary at various stages

 To improve safety, efficiency & save costs
Application
The broad areas of application of quality control are incoming
material control, process control & product control

 It can be applied by any business that produces goods or services

 It can be applied in the Construction industry (product development)
 manufacturing industry or
 In the service sector
Total Quality Management (TQM) Principles
TQM is a way of planning, organizing & understanding each activity of a
construction project

 It is a management approach to provide excellence in customer

satisfaction through the constant delivery of products & services

Control Improvement

 Quality according to Juran is ‘fitness to use’

 Planning is not a one time exercise
According to Philips Crosby
 Quality is conformance with requirements that the company
itself has established for its products, based directly on
customer needs
 ‘Do it for the first time and ‘zero defects
