PERCENTILE
Consider that a set of data is ranked from lowest to highest. Then, that set of data is divided into 100 equal parts.
The values dividing the data into 100 equal parts are called percentile.
If an element has a percentile rank of P 1, then its value is greater than i percent of all the elements of data. Thus,
an element in the 25th percentile rank, which is denoted by P25, is greater than 25 percent of all the elements of the data.
An element that is in 50th percentile, which is denoted as P 50, would mean that the element is greater than 50 percent of the
data. An element on the 50th percentile corresponds to the median of the set.
The following are the steps in determining the rank.
1. Arrange the data in ascending order.
2. Find the percentile rank using the formula
k= ( 100i ) (n+1) Note: If k is a whole number, then i th percentile
where: value. If not, the ith percentile value is the mean of
n = the number of elements the values on either side of k.
i = the percentile rank
k = the index

Example 1: Consider the following data.

12 14 16 19 20 23 25 29 33 36
12 15 16 19 21 23 25 29 34 37
12 15 17 19 22 24 26 29 34 37
13 16 18 19 22 24 27 29 35 39
13 16 18 20 23 25 28 30 36 40

Determine P25 and P65.

Solution: Since the data are already arranged in ascending order, we can move on the next step.

We determine the P25 Since the answer is not a whole number, we

( )
i consider the 12th and 13th values which are 16 and 17,
k= (n+1) respectively.
100
Thus, we have: = 16 + 0.75 (17 – 16)
k= ( )
25
100
(50+1) = 16 + 0.75 (1)
= 16.75
Therefore, P25 = 16.75
k =( 0.25 ) (51)
k =12.75 We determine the P65
( 100i ) (n+1)
Since the answer is not a whole number, we
k= consider the 33rd and 34th values which are 26 and 27,
respectively.
k =(
100 )
65 Thus, we have: = 26 + 0.15 (27 – 26)
(50+1)
= 26 + 0.15 (1)
k =( 0.65 ) (51) = 26.15
k =33.15 Therefore, P65 = 26.1

Lesson: Decile Performance Task:
Quarter 4, Week 5 Date: April 08 – 12, 2024 _______________
Name: Section:

At the end of this learning kit, you will be able to:

1. Illustrate the measure of position: Decile.

DAY
1
How would you apply the concept of decile into real life situation?
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

DECILE
We may also divide a given set of data into 10 equal parts; we call it decile. To illustrate, arranging the given
scores 42, 38, 51, 35, 37, 45, 49, 65, 70 and 68, we have
35 37 38 42 45 49 51 65 68 70
We can already see the ten parts easily since there are originally 10 scores. Each score becomes decile rank. We
can say that 37 is the second decile and the seventh decile is 51.
To determine the decile rank, we follow the same steps in finding the percentile:
1. Arrange the data in ascending order.
2. Find the decile rank using the formula
k= ( 10i ) (n+1)
where:
n = the number of elements
i = the decile rank
k = the index

Example 1: Consider the following data, determine D7?

12 14 16 19 20 23 25 29 33 36 Solution: Since the data are already arranged in ascending order, we can
12 15 16 19 21 23 25 29 34 37 move on the next step.
12 15 17 19 22 24 26 29 34 37 We determine the D7
13 16 18 19 22 24 27 29 35 39 Given: k = ? ; n = 50 ; i = 7
13 16 18 20 23 25 28 30 36 40 k= ( 10i ) (n+1)
k =( ) (50+1)
7
10
k =( 0.7 )( 51)
k =35.7

Since the answer is not a whole number, we consider the 35th and 36th values which are 28 and 29, respectively.
Thus, we have: = 35 + 0.7 (29 – 28)
= 35 + 0.7 (1)
= 35.7
Therefore, D7 = 35.7
