Cell phones are an integral part of our society, and their main use is
communication. They keep students in touch with the rest of the world by giving
them the power to interact with it. In my day, if you forgot your lunch, you were
at the mercy of the office calling home for you. Now, students have the ability
to solve their own problems and handle certain emergencies on their own.
Cell phones also allow students to keep in touch with students at other
schools or friends that don't go to school. While not an educational benefit
directly, better relationships can lead to higher self-esteem and reduce isolation,
which is good for everybody. In the same way, camera phones allow students to
capture the kinds of memories that help build a solid school culture, and, in
some cases, can act as documentation of misbehavior in the same way that
store cameras provide evidence and deter bad behavior.
Academically, the cell phone can act as to record video of a procedure of
explanation that may need to be reviewed later. It could be used to record audio
of a lecture, as well, for later review. And just imagine if classes could be
easily taped for students who are absent. What if they could even be streamed
and seen from home instantly?

One of the more difficult things young people face when they want to travel
is the lack of funds. During summer holidays and possibly at weekends, they are
able to take on part-time jobs, but the money they make is just a drop in the
bucket of what they need to travel far away. For example, traveling to Australia
from Viet Nam can be quite expensive just for an airline ticket, and to a lot of
students wanting to travel, it can seem out of reach.
For students wanting to travel to Australia and New Zealand in particular,
however, they are in luck. Although many countries offer working holidays, these
two countries are well- known for offering them. When a young person signs up
to get a working holiday visa, he only pays for the round-trip airfare to get to
either place and only needs to carry some extra cash for incidentals. Once he is
there, a job awaits where he can earn some money.
Many of the jobs require little or no experience, such as picking fruit or
working in a busy pub out in the countryside. Some of the jobs require more
11
experience that most people are unlikely to have, such as being a certified welder
to work for eight weeks on a farm. That shouldn't discourage you, though,
because there is always something to be found if you search hard enough.
There are many websites that advertise working holidays in Australia and
New Zealand. If you have the courage and are looking for a way to make a little
money and see the world, it might be just the ticket you were looking for.

The water we drink and use is running short in the world. We all have to

to find ways of reusing it. Experiments have already been done in this field.
Today in most large cities, fresh water is used only once, then it runs into

There it can be filtered and treated with chemicals so that it can be used again,
just as it were fresh from a spring.
But even if every large city purified and reused its water, we still would not
have enough. Then we could turn to the oceans. All we would have to do to make

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the
shortage of clean water. Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. But
acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage have made many sources of water
undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of
poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains
a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not
exist anywhere else in the world. But they are being destroyed by the massive
volumes of industrial effluent which pours into the lake everyday. Even where
law existed, the government did not have the power to enforce them. Most
industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of
the world’s water surface. But it is the dumping ground for 50% of all marine
27
pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles off
shore. Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply
of clean water in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been
ruined by pollution and sewage. Clean water is now scarce, and we are at last
beginning to respect this precious source. We should do something now.

Every one of us produces garbage of one kind or another. Some of the
garbage is thrown into the sea. Some is burnt or buried under the ground. Every
year we need to find about 800.000 cubic meters of empty land just to bury the
garbage.
This is the same as filling one football stadium with garbage up to 20 meters
high! This garbage damages the environment. Although a lot of garbage is buried
in the ground, some of it gets blown about in the wind. Also, when garbage is
burnt, poisonous gases are given off into the air. The garbage thrown into the
sea will pollute the water.
What can we do about these problems? One very easy answer is to produce
less garbage. We can recycle things made from glass and paper as well as tin
cans. People can refuse to take the plastic bags from the shops and supermarkets
by bringing with them their own bags or baskets when they go shopping.
The government should tell people about the dangers of garbage pollution.
Education is perhaps the most important factor for keeping our environment
healthy for the future.

If you'd like to improve your English, one thing you can do is to build up
your vocabulary. In order to do this, you have to practice a lot. I'm afraid there
is not a short cut for this. But there are many effective ways. First of all, you
should read a lot. You can read short stories, comics, newspapers, magazines,
etc. depending on your English level. As you read, you can try to guess the
meanings of unknown words from the context of the sentence. If you cannot,
then look up the definition in a dictionary. English to English dictionary should
be your first choice and keep the translator as last. Another way of building
vocabulary is to watch movies in English which will also help with pronunciation.
Try to be involved with the language as much as you can. Keep a vocabulary
notebook and write down a few Words each day. Keep in mind that you have to
revise them regularly. In my opinion, to communicate with people all you need is
words. Even if you just say the words one after another, people most likely will
understand what you mean regardless of the order of the words and grammar.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your
answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Everybody likes to feel that she or he is special. Sadly, many of us grow up
believing that we're not special at all. We wish that we could be more attractive
or better at sports. We wish we had more money or nicer clothes. Like the Tin
Man, the Scarecrow, or the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, we think we're
not good enough just as we are. In the film, the Tin Man wishes he had a heart.
The Scarecrow wishes that he had a brain, and the Lion wants
38
courage. Eventually, each of them realizes that he already has what he wants.
Nearly all parents want us to be the best we can be. They occasionally attempt
to encourage us to do better by comparing us to others. They mean well, but the
message we usually get is that we're not good enough. We start to believe that
the only way we can be special is by being better than somebody else, but we are
frequently disappointed. There will always be somebody out there that is better
than we are at something. There are a lot of people around who may not be as
intelligent as we are but who are better at sports. Or they may not be as
handsome, but they have more money. It is unthinkable for us to be better than
everybody else all the time. Like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly
Lion, we all need what we believe will make us better people. What we don't
understand is that often we already have inside us the very things that we look
for. Our parents often forget to tell us that we are special, that we are good
enough just as we are. Perhaps no one told them when they were growing up, or
maybe they just forgot. Either way, it's up to us to remind them sometimes that
each of us, in our own way, is special. What we are . . . is enough.

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the
shortage of clean water.Having clean drinking water is a basic human right.
However, acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage have made many sources of
water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast
pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It
contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1, 300 rare species that
do not exist anywhere else in the world. Yet, they are being destroyed by the
massive volumes of industrial effluent which pour into the lake every day. Even
though laws have been made, the government do not have the power to
enforce them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean
Sea occupies 1% of the world's water surface, but it is the dumping ground for
50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial
wastes a few miles off shore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply
of clean water in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been
ruined by pollution and sewage. Clean water is now scarce, and we are at last
beginning to respect this precious source. We should do something now.

Scandinavia has ranked as the best place in the world to raise children.
The Nordic region holds the top three places on the US News & World Report's
list of "The Best Countries for Raising Kids" in 2020. The list has been compiled
annually since 2016 in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania.
Denmark topped the list, with Sweden a close runner-up, and neighbour Norway
edging out Canada for third place. The 2020 listings will come as little surprise
as the three nations also ranked highest on the list for 2019. A spokeswoman
explained: "These countries tend to have generous paternal leave and maternal
leave, offer free preschool and have good overall public education systems."
The listing was released as part of the annual "Best Countries" list. This
survey adopted "a global perceptions-based" approach in examining data and
attitudes. It used research from the World Bank, as well as the opinions of
20,000 people in the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
esearchers tested countries against 65 different metrics, or what the researchers
called "country attributes". These included income equality, well-developed
public education and healthcare systems, human rights, gender equality, safety,
54
family friendliness and levels of perceived happiness. Switzerland once again
topped the "Best Countries" list, followed by Canada and Japan.
