What’s In

In the previous lesson, you have learned about the characteristics of homogeneous
and heterogeneous mixtures. You have also identified the kinds of mixtures which are
solutions, suspensions and colloids.

Science Concepts Learned:

 Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition all throughout since the

components of the mixtures appear in one phase.
 Heterogeneous mixtures do NOT have a uniform composition since the
components of the mixtures remain distinguishable.
 The kinds of mixtures are solutions, suspensions and colloids.
 Solutions are homogeneous mixtures which are formed when one substance
(solute) dissolved in another substance (solvent).

What’s New
Read the literary pieces below and be informed of the uses and benefits
of mixtures in our daily lives.

MAGIC JUICE IS THE SOLUTION

by Ronna Lyn P. Osorio

Hot! Hot! Hot!

Body sweats here! Body sweats everywhere!
Summer time in the country is here!
Nanay went out to buy a juice powder.
while Tatay was outside fetching water.
Kuya bought an ice with might.
Then Ate stirred the juice with delight.
The youngest was so surprised!
Magic! Magic! Magic!
Not only that the juice powder
is dissolved in water,
but the juice is delicious.

4
SUSPENSION FOR EVERYDAY FUNCTION
by GLADYS N. VILLACORTA
and best served in cold this summer!
In life, we need healthy bodily function
We need suspension mixtures to carry on.
Mixtures that can be used as food and beverages as source of nutrition,
beauty items, as we continue life’s daily proportion.
These are useful every day, and we all call them Suspension.

“COLLOIDAL PRODUCTS”

Ice cream, butter, jam and jelly are yummy,

Mayonnaise and whipped cream and also gelatine
are some ingredients and flavoring.
Toothpaste, shampoo and washing powder are for cleaning, and for washing,
All of these things are used every day,
useful colloidal products in the environment we see.

How are the mixtures mentioned in the poems used? Are the solution, suspension
and colloid important in our daily lives?

What is It

Everywhere we can find different mixtures at home – can be used as cooking

ingredients, medicines and or beauty products.
Commonly, we easily find juice powder at home which we can dissolve and can be
used as refreshment. Coffee and iced teas are also among the other examples of solutions
that are used as refreshments and beverages at home. We can also find solutions in the
kitchen which are also used as food such as soup of tinola. When cooking, we can mix
variety of ingredients that can be dissolved in water, oil and other liquid agents. For
example, adding sugar in our Adobo recipe.
Solutions are not limited at home. We can also see solutions in beauty products
such as astringents, cologne and perfumes, as cleaning agents such as alcohol and
bleach.
Most importantly, in the survival of all life forms, air is a gaseous solution.

Suspension is a kind of mixture that is necessary for our day to day existence
since we use this mixture in our everyday life. The following are the uses of suspension:
 Suspension is used in the whole milk preparation. Whole milk is a suspension
of cream and milk.
 Suspension is used in the food that we eat like peanut butter and oil and vinegar
salad dressing. Peanut butter is a suspension of oil and mashed peanut while the
oil and vinegar salad dressing is a suspension of oil and vinegar.
 Suspension is used in some of the beverages (drinks) that we prepared at home
like orange juice, hot chocolate and brewed coffee.
 Suspensions are used in food industry (Del Monte & Sardines’ Industry).

5
 Suspensions are used in pharmaceutical products (medicines) and
processes. Some liquid medicines particularly those with label “Shake well
before using.”
 There are cleaning agents used at home, offices and industries that can be
classified as suspension such as fabric conditioning, disinfectant spray such as
Lysol, which we usually use these days due to pandemic.
 Concentrated liquids which can be used as fertilizer, pesticide or herbicide are
also examples of suspension.

On the other hand, a colloid is a mixture of two or more substances mixed

together but not chemically combined (they can be separated). It is a mixture with
particles evenly scattered in a dispersed medium without settling down.
The different examples of colloids are important to daily life. Natural colloids such as
blood, clouds and fog are basic for living things. Man-made colloids are also useful.
Numerous colloids such as milk, butter, gelatine, jam, jelly, and other creamy
substances such as mayonnaise, whipped cream and catsup are used as food or
ingredients for preparing and cooking food. Some colloids such as magnesium
hydroxide and ointments are used as medicines while lotion and facial cream are for
cosmetics or beauty products. Dishwashing liquids and powder detergent are for
cleaning dishes and clothes while toothpaste is for cleaning teeth. Paints have both
protective and decorative functions. Styrofoam and inks are used in offices as well
as paste and glue for binding purposes. Shampoo and conditioner for washing and
smoothing hair while hair gel is for styling hair. Insecticides and pesticides are
used in farming.

What’s More
List an example of mixtures based on the given usage then identify
its kind as solution, suspension and colloid that are found at home, in the kitchen, and
offices. Use the given example as your guide. Write your answer in your Science activity

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you learned about the uses of solution, suspension and colloid
as food, beverage, cooking ingredient, as pharmaceutical or medicinal products and as
beauty products or cosmetics. These mixtures do not only limit on those uses, solution,
suspension and colloid mixtures are also used in many ways. These also include as
cleaning agents or disinfectants, industrial items and as agricultural products.

What’s New

Look at the pictures of mixtures below and examine the other uses of solution,
suspension and colloid.

What is It

11
There are many other uses of mixtures. Like solutions which are not only limited
at home. We can also see solutions in our industries in a form of solid like steel and bronze,
in the form of gas like hydrogen solution and in the form of liquid in solid like mercury, water
in solid salt or sugar, forming moist solids, Hexane in paraffin wax. In the field of agriculture,
water as a solvent is used to dissolve the mineral salts and fertilizers so that plants can
absorb them quickly. In hydroponics, the roots of plants are immersed in solutions
containing dissolved mineral salts.

In industries, water is used as a dissolving agent for making soaps, textiles, food
and household items. Turpentine is also used as a solvent for paints, inks and dyes.
Suspensions are also used in various ways such as drilling muds and emulsified
oils in industries. There agricultural chemicals like pesticide, insecticide, herbicide that are
in suspension form. These chemicals are very useful to the farmers.
On the other hand, colloids play equal importance like the solution and suspension
mixtures. These are also used as cleaning agents like liquid detergents, bleach and
disinfectant liquids. A colloid is used as thickening agents in industrial products such as
lubricants, lotions, toothpaste, coatings, etc. In the manufacture of paints and
inks, colloids are useful. In ball-point pens, the ink used is a gel (liquid-solid colloid).
Because of these reasons, mixtures are really important in our day-to-day living.
We live and do our activities daily with the help of solution, suspension and colloid.
