by
GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO

SETTING
The setting took place in Florence, Italy
CHARACTER
Federigo – a young Florentine
Monna Giovanna – the woman who stole the heart of Federigo
Monna’s son
SUMMARY
The story starts with a young man named Federigo who gave everything to he
had for a woman who did not love him back; Monna, a noblewoman and a beauty. Due
to her husband dying, she and her son moved to a country side near Federigo’s house.
One day, Monna’s son became ill and told her that “The only thing that could make me
feel better was if Federigo’s falcon were to become mine.” So, Monna decided to go to
Federigo’s house just to learn that the food that they ate was the falcon. Days passed
and her son died, her brother told her that she should marry again so she married
Federigo as she realizes all his sacrifices just for her.
CONFLICT
Man vs Man
Federigo sacrificed everything he had in order to impress Monna, but Monna did
not love him back. He cooked his prized falcon without knowing that the falcon was the
reason why she went to his house in the first place.
THEME
People make great sacrifices for love, sometimes with unanticipated
consequences. The story shows us about a man who gave up his most prized
possessions for the woman he loved. This resulted on him losing everything, including
his prized falcon.
REFLECTION
In the story Federigo’s Falcon, Federigo was in love with Monna and was willing
to give everything to her, but Monna rejected him. The story reflects on patriarchal
norms, wherein it emphasizes women’s dependence on men.
Federigo’s Falcon is a great story which portrays a woman’s journey as she
faces great obstacles; such as when her husband and son died. Monna showed us
resilience even though she was facing such heavy problems. Giovanna’s role primarily
revolved around her marriage, while her decisions were being influenced by the societal
norm of being the "ideal woman"
