Sample problem
1. The floor slab of a library is supported by W530x66
sections spaced at s =1.8m on centers, as shown in the
figure. Given the following load:
Floor Slab: Unit Weight = 23 kN/m3
Thickness = 100 mm
Floor Load: Dead Load = 1.2 kPa
Live Load = 4.8 kPa
Determine the following based on ASD and LRFD
a. The governing load (kPa) of the slab.
b. The governing load (kN/m) of the beam.

2. A roof system is subjected to the following loads:
Roof Dead Load = 2.0 kPa
Roof Live or Rain Load = 1.45 kPa
Wind Load = 1.55 kPa
The roof is supported by W410 x 60 spaced at
2.8m on centers. Compute the governing factored
load per linear meter of the beam based on LRFD
load combination.

Sample problem
3. The interior column of a multi-storey is subjected to
the following axial loads:
Dead Load = 900 kN
Reduced Live Load from Floors = 1100 kN
Roof Live Load = 200 kN
Fluid Pressure = 110 kN
Wind Loads:
Compression = 560 kN
Tension = 460 kN
Earthquake Load:
Compression = 260 kN
Tension = 310 kN
Determine the governing factored column load Pu,
using the LRFD. Assume that factor f1 = 0.50
