Problem Sheet

Tension members

1. Find the net area in tension of the following:

a. A rod 20mm dia. threaded at ends.
b. 2 rods 16mm dia. threaded at ends.
c. An eye bar having a section 5 cm X 12 mm.
d. An angle 100X75X12 connected by 10 cm leg by means of 13 mm dia. rivets
in single line.
e. Angle as in (d) but connected through 7.5 cm leg.

2. A tension member carrying a tensile road of 200 kN consists of an unequal angle ISA
125 X 95 connected to gusset plate through the 125 mm leg by means of two rows of
18 mm dia. rivets as shown in Fig. 1

3. The main tie bar of a truss has to carry a load of 87 kN. Design a suitable double angle
section for it. What is the number of 16mm dia. rivets required to connect the member
with 10mm gusset plates at the ends.

4. Determine the allowable tensile load on an unequal angle ISA 100 X 75 X 6 mm welded
to 10mm gussets at the ends through the 100 mm leg. Design the connecting welds
a. On the sides only
b. On the sides and ends as well.

5. Design the double angle tension member connected on the same side of a 10 mm gusset
plate to carry an axial tension of 400 kN.
