Measures of Central Tendency

Mean
Q1. The sum of deviations of a certain number of items measured from 2.5 is 50 and from 3.5 is – 50.
Find N & mean. (Ans: N = 100, mean = 3)

We have given

We know
So, ...............(1)
................
(2)
Subtract eq.(1) from eq.(2),

Therefore the number of items,

Put the value of n in eq.(1),

Therefore arithmetic mean,

Q2. Following are the marks obtained by 25 students in economics. Find out the mean marks by using
direct and shortcut method.
Marks 10 20 30 40 50 60
No. of students 5 2 3 8 4 3
(Ans: mean = 35.2)

Q3. Find out the missing frequencies of the following series if the arithmetic mean is 35 and total number
of items is 100.
C.I. 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70
No. of students 5 10 Missing 4 20 3 Missing
(Ans: f1 = 41 f2 = 17 approx)
Use Efm/n
M = mid value of class
N= total of f

Q4. The mean monthly salary paid to all employees in a certain company was `600. The mean monthly
salaries paid to male and female employees were `620 and `520 respectively. Find the percentage of
male to female employees in the company. (Ans: 80% men, 20% women)

Q5. The mean monthly salary paid to 77 employees in a company was `78. The mean salary of 32 of them
was `45 and of other 25 was `82. What was the mean salary of the remaining?
(Ans: mean salary = 125.8)
Q1 The mean height of 25 male workers in a factory is 61cms and the mean height of 35 female workers
in the same factory is 58cms. Find the combined mean height of 60 workers in the factory.
(Ans: combined mean, X 12 = 59.25)

Q2 The average rainfall for a week excluding Sunday was 10cm. due to heavy rainfall on Sunday, the
average for the week rose to 15 cm. how much rainfall was on Sunday? (Ans: 45 cm)

Average rainfall from Monday to Saturday = 10cm (i.e., for 6 days)

Total rainfall for 6 days = 10 inch × 6 = 60 cm
Average rainfall for the entire week including Sunday = 15 cm
Total rainfall for 7 days = 15 × 7 = 105
Hence, rainfall on Sunday = 105-60 = 45

Q3 Mean of 100 observations is found to be 40. If at the time of computation 2 items are wrongly taken
as 30 & 27 instead of 37 and 72. Find the correct mean. (Ans: 40.18)
Number of observations=100
Mean=40
Sum of values of observations=40×100=4000
30 and 27 noted instead of 37 and 72
Correct sum=4000−30−27+37+72=4052
Correct mean=4052/100=40.52
