Abstract

Education is crucial for children's success, but some parents exert pressure on

their children to succeed. A good parent-child relationship promotes healthy

development and helps alleviate behavioral adaptation problems. A balanced

relationship encourages children to work harder and improve academic performance.

However, excessive academic pressure can negatively impact students' well-being and

how they think.

The unpleasant experiences highlighted are very much felt by the most of the

students at Padre Garcia Integrated National High School. However, when they are

under pressure, they only ever feel the urge to please their parents out of fear of

disappointing them.

This study aimed to gain understanding of the experiences of selected

academic achiever students in Padre Garcia Integrated National High School. It made

use of interpretative phenomenological analysis in investigating and explaining the

struggles, difficulties and their experiences. It involved eight academic achiever senior

high school students in Padre Garcia Integrated National High School who were

selected via convenience and purposive sampling. Face-to-face interview using self-

constructed semi-structured interview schedule and observation were used to gather

the necessary data. After thorough interpretation and analysis, four major themes

emerged that constituted to the experiences of subjects: family dynamics, bridge to

academic success, cognitive bias, and minimizing stress.

It was recommended that the school administration may conduct a program or

meeting with parents that could provide them knowledge about the repercussion of an

overwhelming parental academic pressure. More so, the parents may devise a different

strategy to increase their kids' self-efficacy so they can lessen the burden imposed on

them academically. Students may also work on self-control to help them deal with the

pressure and high expectations their parents set on them as well as the difficulties,

hardships, and stress they will encounter in life.
