FUNCTION
UNDERSTAND GRAMMAR * Talking/writing about events in the past

Read these sentences: ’Go’ is an irregular verb. Now look at the verb ’to work’ in the past
I play tennis on Saturdays. Irregular verbs may vary a lot in the past simple affirmative form.
I played tennis last Saturday simple. Read the list of verbs on page 48.

The past simple of ’play’ is’ played and We worked

We make the affirmative form of the past
’Play’ is a regular verb simple tense with the subject and the verb The rules we use to add ’ed’ to the verb
All regular verbs make their past tense in the past simple tense. Look at this are the same rulers we use to add ’ing’ to
adding ’Ed’ or ’D’ to the verb diagram: the verb (see page 32)

Past simple Look at these examples:

When a verb ends in ’y’ preceded by a


consonant, it drops the ’y’ and adds ’ied’.
