Example

Determine the area of main steel required for beam subjected to uniformly distributed dead load gk = 12 kN/m and
imposed load qk = 8 kN/m.
The following characteristic material strengths: fck = 25 N/mm2 for concrete and fyk = 500 N/mm2 for steel reinforcement
are used. The partial safety factor for dead load is 1.35 and for imposed load is 1.5.

Choose four H20 bars, area = 1260 mm2

Therefore, steel percentage is within limits specified by code

Determine the moment capacity of cross-section in figure with area of tension reinforcement As= 1470 mm2. The following
characteristic material strengths are used fck= 25 N/mm2 for the concrete and fyk= 500 N/mm2 for reinforcement
