Introduction to Structural Design: Loading Distribution

Recall lecture

Design load= 1.35Gk+1.5Qk

Gk: dead load

Qk: imposed load
Introduction to Structural Design: Loading Distribution

Example:

Floor with overall depth of 225 mm is to be designed to carry an variable action of 3 kN/m2 plus floor finishes and
ceiling loads of 1 kN/m2. Assume that all column heights are 3 m and the unit weight of beam and column are 0.7
and 0.6 kN/m respectively; and unit weight of concrete is 24 kN/m3 respectively.

1. Calculate design loads acting on beams B1–C1, B2–C2 and B1–B3 and columns B1 and C1

2. Bending moments and shear forces on beams B2-C2 and B1-B3

Introduction to Structural Design: Loading Distribution

Example: Solution

1. Unit weights of materials

✓ Slab:
Dead load = self-weight + finishes = 0.225 x 24 + 1= 6.4 kN/m2
Variable Action = 3.0 kN/m2
Design load = (1.35 x 6.4) + (1.5 x 3) = 13.14 kN/m2

✓ Beam:
Dead load = self-weight = 0.7 kN/m
Design load = 1.35 x 0.7 = 0.945 kN/m

✓ Column:
Dead load = self-weight = 0.6 kN/m
Design load = 1.35 x 0.6 = 0.81 kN/m

Example: Solution

2. Design loads:
✓ Beam B1–C1: supports a uniformly distributed load from a 1.5 m width of slab plus self-weight

Design load = slab load + self-weight of beam

= (13.14 x 6 x 1.5) + (0.945 x 6) =123.93 kN

Since beam is symmetrically loaded:

2. Design loads:
✓ Beam B2–C2: supports a uniformly distributed load from a 3 m width of slab plus self-weight

Design load = slab load + self-weight of beam

= (13.14 x 6 x 3) + (0.945 x 6) = 242.19 kN

Since beam is symmetrically loaded:

2. Design loads:
✓ Beam B1–B3: supports a uniformly distributed load from a 1.5 m width of slab plus self-weight and
reaction transmitted from beam B2–C2

Design load = slab load + self-weight of beam + point load

= (13.14 x 6 x 1.5) + (0.945 x 6) + 121.095 = 245 kN

2. Design loads:

✓ Column B1: supports the reactions from beams A1–B1, B1–C1 and B1–B3 and its self-weight

Design load = RA1-B1 + RB1-C1+ RB1-B3 + self-weight

= (0.945 x 3/2) + 61.965 + 122.5 + 0.81 x 3 = 188.3 kN
Introduction to Structural Design: Loading Distribution

Example: Solution

2. Design loads:

Column C1: supports the reactions from beams B1–C1 and C1–C3 and its self-weight.

Beam C1–C3 supports reactions from B2–C2=121.095 kN and self-weight 0.945x6=5.67 kN

Design load = RB1-C1+ RC1-C3 + self-weight

= 61.965 + (121.095 + 5.67) / 2 + (0.81 x 3) = 127.77 kN
