Quarter: 0 Week: 3 MELC(s): Select electrical measuring tools and

instruments
MELC Code: TLE_IAEI7/8MC-0c-1
➢Title of Textbook/LM to Study: TLE 7/8 LM Electrical Installation and
Maintenance (EIM), page 47
➢ Topic: Selecting Electrical Measuring Tools and Instruments
➢ Objectives: a. Select measuring tools and instruments; and
b. how to read graduation of the given measuring tools and
instruments.

Let Us Discover

Now that you know how to identify and name varied electrical measuring and testing
instruments, let us proceed to the utilization of such tools and identify objects or components
to be measured. Your knowledge of the previous lesson will help you work successfully in this
lesson. But take note in this lesson we will be discussing linear measurement.

Measurement is the process or the result of determining the ratio of a physical quantity, such
as a length, time, temperature, etc., to a unit of measurements, such as the meter, second, or
degree Celsius. The science of measurement is called metrology.

Let us begin with the ruler, pull-push rule. Here are the steps using ruler, pull-push
rule, and measuring tools in the construction work.

Points 1-2 is the height which is 2.8cm

Points 3-4 is the width, 2.4 cm
Points 5-6 is the length, 3.8 cm

Measure the height, width, and length of an office table as illustrated using your measuring
tool.

Measuring Tools

Level Bar
Measure the levelness and straightness using the level bar.

1. In measuring levelness, place the lever bar on horizontal and read good or centered locator
to assume the perfect level job.

2. In measuring straightness, place lever bar on vertical position and read good or centered
locator to assume perfect straight.

3. In measuring 450, place the lever bar on the measured position and read good or centered
locator to assume perfect angle.

Wire Gauge and Caliper Caliper

These are used in determining

the size of wires/conductors. The
gauge ranges from 0 to 60 AWG.

Volt-ohmmeter otherwise called as

Multi-tester, is used to measure the
voltage, resistance and current of a
circuit.

Clamp Tester - it is also called tong-

tester. It is used to measure current
flowing in a conductor. It is clamped or
hanged in a conductor.

Pull-push rule is a measuring tool
used to measure the length of an object
in centimeter and inches.

Ruler is a measuring tool used to

measure length, width and thickness of
short flat object and in sketching
straight lines.

Ammeter is an instrument used to

measure the amount of electrical
current intensity in a circuit. The unit of
measure is ampere (a). It is connected
along or series to the circuit

Voltmeter is an instrument used to

measure electrical pressure or voltage
of a circuit. The unit of measure is volt
(v). This is connected across or parallel
to the circuit.

Test Light is a pocket size tool used to

test the line wire or circuit if there is
current in it.

Let Us Try

ACTIVITY 1. MEASURE ME!

Direction: Measure the actual height (cm), width (cm), and the length (cm) of a given
box as illustrated using your measuring tool.
l
w
a. Height ___________

b. Width ___________
h
c. Length __________

Let Us Do

ACTIVITY 2. COPY, DO and PERFORM!

Directions: Using a pull-push rule or ruler in your home, measure the length, width, and
thickness/height of something available. Fill out your answer inside the corresponding
box.

Let Us Apply

How are you? Did you enjoy doing drawing activities and doing different tasks? Let us check
how much have you learned.

Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer and write your answer on the blank
provided before the number.
