1.

What should the operator of a milling machine do to make the machine a safe piece of
equipment?

Never run the machine faster than the correct cutting speed. Make sure that the machine is fully
stopped before taking any measurements. Always use cutters which are sharp and in good condition.
Don't place anything on the milling machine table such as wrenches, hammers, or tools.

2. Why should the machine be kept clean and properly oiled?

Not only does proper lubrication keep the mechanics of your tools and equipment running smoothly, it
also decreases the chances of rust developing. As such, most tool and equipment manufacturers
recommend that you regularly lubricate your tools and equipment, rather than waiting for them to seize
up entirely.

3. What are the three dividing heads used?

The types of dividing heads used on milling machines are plain, universal, and helical.
4. What are the three dividing heads used?
The types of dividing heads used on milling machines are plain, universal, and helical.
5. What are the basic differences between the dividing heads?
In a plain dividing head, the spindle rotates about a horizontal axis. The universal dividing head
differs from the plain head in that the spindle can be tilted or swiveled to any angular position in
a vertical plane. The helical dividing head is different since the spindle of the head can be
connected to the table lead screw by gears so that the work can be rotated as it is moved
longitudinally by the table.
6. What is compound indexing?
Compound indexing is a method of obtaining a desired spindle movement by first turning the
index crank to a definite setting as in plain indexing and then turning the index plate itself to
locate the crank in the correct position.
7. What is angular indexing?
Instead of rotating the job through certain division on its periphery, sometimes it
may be needed to rotate the job through certain angle. Angular indexing is used
for this purpose.
8. What is block indexing?
Block indexing is sometimes called multiple indexing. The chief advantage of block indexing is
that the heat generated by the cutter (especially when cutting cast iron gears with coarse pitch)
is distributed more evenly around the rim of the gear.
9. What is an indexing plate?

An indexing plate is a plate perforated with variously spaced holes arranged in concentric circles and is
used in a milling or similar machine for dividing work (such as spacing out teeth in gear cutting).

10. What is an indexing wheel?

An index wheel is a circular wheel or disc graduated around its circumference for indicating the angular
measurements through which it has been moved. It is used on dividing engines for testing or for
adjusting the feed on lathes
1. What is the robot’s role in the machine shop?
Robots can be used in the machine shop to drill, route finished products, deburr, hone, lap,
grind, and do other procedures. Robots are made up of a number of subsystems. They can be
classified in a number of ways. Industrial robots have arms and grippers attached. They are
made up of a manipulator, a base, and an arm with a wrist.
2. What does CNC mean?
The computer numerical control (CNC) drill provides automatic process control and drilling
precision for various machining operations
3. What is a robot?
Robots are made up of a number of subsystems. They can be classified in a number of ways.
4. Identify the following: A. Manipulator B. Base C. Arm
The manipulator is one of the basic parts of the robot (Figure 12.5). All components of a robot
must be operational for the robot to function and do its job accurately. The manipulator is
classified by certain arm movements.
The base may be rigid, or it can be designed as a supporting unit for all the component parts of
the robot.
It may be jointed and resemble a human arm, or it may be a slide-in/slide-out type used to grasp
something and bring it back closer to the robot
5. What do the grippers do on a robot?
The grippers are at the end of the wrist. They are used to hold whatever the robot is to
manipulate. Pick-and-place robots have grippers to move objects from one place to another.
6. How does the wrist work and for what purpose?

The function of the wrist joint is to provide range of motion necessary to adequately perform daily
functions while maintaining a physiologic level of inherent stability.

7. What is a work cell?

A work cell is a logical and strategic arrangement of resources in a
business environment. These arrangements are put into place to
organize and improve process flow, increase efficiency, reduce costs,
and eliminate wastage.
8. What kinds of operations can a robot perform? How should a drift punch be used?

Today most robots are used in manufacturing operations; the applications can be divided into three
categories: (1) material handling, (2) processing operations, and (3) assembly and inspection

The long end of a drift punch is placed into the semi-aligned bolt holes of two separate components, and
then driven into the hole

9. What does pick and place mean?

pick and place (PNP) machine is a robotic assembly device that uses a vacuum to lift a component off of
a piece of tape, rotate it to the right orientation, then place it on a circuit board.

10. What is a teach pendant?

Robotic teach pendants are handheld devices usually included with the purchase of an industrial robot.
The unit is easy to use, allowing the owner to make any changes or additions to the programming
function of the robot.
