Basa Pilipinas is USAID/Philippines’ flagship basic education activity in support of the Philippine
Government’s early grade reading program. Implemented in close collaboration with the
Department of Education (DepEd), Basa Pilipinas aims to improve the reading skills for at least
one million early grade students in Filipino, English and two mother tongue languages (Ilokano and
Sinugbuanong Binisaya). This will be achieved by improving reading instruction, reading delivery
systems, and access to quality reading materials.

While out on a walk, a boy tells his mother
about the different places he wants to go to
and how he wants to visit them. He tells her
that he dreams to have a bike to race with
his friends and a motorcycle to ride with his
father to go to school. He also wants to go
to the market in a tricycle, ride the jeep into
town and a bus to visit the city. As he tells his
mother all these, she brings him to a store in
the city and asks him to choose what kind of
bike he likes fulfilling his dream of having
a bike.
