ACTIVITY 1:
Marshmallow Under Pressure
I. Objectives:
- Investigate the relationships between volume and pressure at constant
temperature of gas (S10MTIVa-b-20)
II. Materials:
- 30 mL plastic syringe (without needle) and plunger - Marshmallows
III. Procedures
1. Put a marshmallow into the
plastic syringe.
2. Insert the plunger and press it
until it is right above the
marshmallow.
3. Seal the tip of the syringe by
pressing your fingertip firmly
against it.
4. Pull outward on the plunger (do
not pull the plunger completely
out). Observe what is happening
to the marshmallow as you do so
5. Now, with your fingertip still in place press the plunger back down. Again,
observe what is happening.

With the plunger in place and your finger on the end of the syringe tip, The
system inside the syringe was closed: nothing could get in, nothing could get out.
2. What do you think happens to the volume of the trapped air as you pull
the plunger as shown in Model A? (Increases or Decreases)
