THE RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN WAR 2022-2023 pp.
The full-scale invasion of the Russian army into Ukraine has caused a wave of neologisms in the
Ukrainian language. These neologisms are used to describe new realities and concepts, as well as to
express negative emotions towards the invaders.
Some of the most common neologisms include:

 For the invaders: vanʹky (Ivan’s), konservy (canned food), nyash-myash (cute-cute), orky (orcs),
putlerivtsi (Putin’s people), pushkinisty (Pushkinists).
 For the leader of Russia – V. Putin: zliʹsnyi kurdupelʹ (spiteful dwarf), liliputin (Lilliputian),
nedomirok (runt), nedopalok (cigarette butt), bunkernyi khrobak (bunker worm), kadebistʹskyi
maniak (KGB maniac).
 For the country-aggressor – Russia: orkystan (Orcstan), Mordor (Mordor), terasha (terrash).

These neologisms are a reflection of the Ukrainian people’s anger, fear, and defiance in the face of
Russian aggression. They are also a testament to the creativity and resilience of the Ukrainian language.
The article also discusses the impact of the war on Ukrainian toponymy, the emergence of new military
terms, and the use of Ukrainian as a marker of national identity.
The author concludes that the war has had a profound impact on the Ukrainian language, and that the
neologisms that have emerged will serve as a reminder of this dark period in Ukrainian history.
